Lady Raiders stun Missouri State on road

Petty, Sissom key win
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – While it was a team effort that propelled Middle Tennessee (4-5) to an exhilarating 71-52 triumph at Missouri State, Ty Petty and Abbey Sissom were a two-girl wrecking crew.
Petty scorched the nets for a game-high 21 points, while Sissom added 17 points. It wasn't just their scoring that propelled the Lady Raiders; however, as their passing and defense were also on point.
Sissom finished with a career-high eight assists and also tied her career high with six rebounds, while Petty dished out six helpers to continue her ascent up the career ladder. With her six assists against Missouri State, Petty collected her 405th career helper to move past Kim Webb and Sherry Smith into seventh place on the career assists lists.
Petty and Sissom were responsible for 66 of the team's 71 points when you combine their scoring with points responsible for (assists). Petty and Sissom were each responsible for 33 points in the triumph.
Middle Tennessee placed four players in double figures against a Missouri State team coming off of a home win against previously undefeated Arkansas. Gabby Lyon finished with a season-high 14 points and six rebounds, to go with three steals. Alex Johnson tallied 12 points and five rebounds, while Rebecca Reuter finished with 12 points and five rebounds.
"It is not easy to beat Missouri State here in Springfield, so this is a really, really good win for our team," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "I really can't begin to tell you how proud I am of our team. We went through a lot on this trip and there was no complaining, just a willingness to improve. The focus and attention to detail was great at shoot-around today and we came out with great energy."
The Lady Raiders flirted with a school-record shooting night before settling for 57.4 percent (27-of-47) from the field. They were 6-of-14 (43 percent) from 3-point range.
"We have been shooting it well lately," Insell said. "When we execute our offense we generally get good looks. Tonight we knocked them down. I thought everyone that played did a good job, but Petty and Sissom really got us jump-started."
It was Petty and Sissom's sizzling start that helped spring the Lady Raiders early.
They scored 20 of the team's first 24 points to establish an early 24-12 first-quarter lead. From there, everyone got involved in the act as Middle Tennessee put together back-to-back wins.
The best and highest-scoring first half of the season got the Lady Raiders off to a roaring start.
Middle Tennessee shot a sizzling 63 percent (15-of-24) in the opening half on the way to a 44-27 lead against the Lady Bears. Petty, Sissom and Johnson keyed the early start.
Petty and Sissom got the ball rolling with 16 combined first-half points. By halftime, Petty had 14, Sissom had 13 and Johnson added 10. The trio combined to shoot 75 percent (12-of-16) in the first half, including 83 percent (5-of-6) from beyond the 3-point arc.
As good as Middle Tennessee was shooting from the outside, its post play was also dominant. The Lady Raiders outscored Missouri State, 34-20 in the paint as Lyon (14 points, 6 rebounds), Johnson (12, 5) and Reuter (7, 1) combined for 43 points and 12 rebounds.
Middle Tennessee's defense forced 16 turnovers and scored 19 off of them.
There is no time to rest as Middle Tennessee will return home to host Georgia Tech (9-2) Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
