MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee sophomore Jacob Pugh was named Conference USA's Men's Tennis Athlete of the Month following a 3-1 singles mark in November, the conference office announced Wednesday.
The Dacula, Georgia, native won three singles matches in the CCB Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Samford, on the clay courts of the Country Club of Birmingham in the Blue Raiders' final event of the fall on November 4-6. Pugh also teamed up with newcomer Nicolas Buitrago Machado to post an unblemished 3-0 record in doubles play.
Pugh opened up the event with a three set win over C-USA foe Marlon Goering of UAB. He came back on the second day of competition to win in straight sets over his opponent from Samford, followed by a dominant performance in the second and third sets of his match against EKU's Colin Hart.
Giovani Pasini of UAB clipped Pugh on the final day of competition, but Pugh and his doubles partner, Buitrago, bounced back to win over Pasini and Fernando Vargas of UAB, 7-6 (3), in doubles. Pugh and Buitrago finished off their weekend in doubles by winning 6-4 over a pair from EKU and dominating 6-1 on Sunday.
"Jacob came back in a lot better shape than last year, and he brought in some experience knowing what we're expecting in our program," MT head coach Jimmy Borendame said of Pugh. "He's made a few adjustments to his game, and really committed to the game style that fits him best.
"In the fall season our focus is to get ourselves ready for the upcoming spring. Jacob is always a factor. His work ethic has driven his success."
This award is the first of Pugh's career at MT. The Blue Raiders will open up the 2017 dual match season on Jan. 16 against Chattanooga and TSU at the Adams Tennis Complex. The ATC will play host to the 2017 C-USA Men's Tennis Championship on April 21-23.
