Senior averaged 23 points in two wins
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee senior guard Brea Edwards has been named C-USA Player of the Week after helping the Blue Raiders to a pair of league wins last week. Edwards joins LA Tech's Brandi Wingate as the only three-time recipients of the award this year.
Edwards nearly averaged a double-double with 23.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in victories over Marshall and red-hot WKU. The Rockford, Ill., native was a force against the Hilltoppers as she scored a game-high 29 points and pulled a season-high 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Her performance helped to end WKU's 14-game win streak.
One of the most prolific shooters in college basketball, Edwards added to her remarkable totals by knocking down 73 percent (8-for-11) of her 3-points attempts. She shot 60 percent (12-for-20) from the field overall in the two wins, and also shot 88 percent (14-for-16) from the free-throw line.
"The biggest thing is that our team is playing well together and we are getting these wins," Edwards said. "Right now it seems that we have different people stepping up at the right time and that is what it takes to win. This is such a tough conference and there are so many great players out there so I'm very thankful to receive this award."
Edwards entered the week ranked among the Top 25 nationally in four categories. She improved upon those totals after two more outstanding shooting performances. The sharpshooting guard missed her first 3-point attempt against WKU, and then proceeded to knock down five straight. Edwards finished the game 5-for-6 beyond the arc and 7-for-10 overall. She was also 10-for-12 from the free-throw line, including going 6-for-6 in the final 39 seconds to help seal the win.
"Brea is just a winner," Blue Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "She got us going against WKU with some big, big shots in the first half. She kind of set the tone early, but Brea has been doing that all season. She has really stepped up for her basketball team, and we have needed her to do that. I'm very proud of Brea Edwards."
Edwards also had a strong showing against Marshall with 17 points on 3-for-5 shooting from 3-point range. She added a game-high seven rebounds.
She closed out the week ranked sixth in the NCAA for 3-point field goals per game (3.25), and eighth nationally for 3-point field goal percentage (45.1) and 3-point field goals made (65).
Edwards has hit at least one 3-pointer in 34 straight games dating to last season.
