Raiders Fall in Ruston
2/11/2016 10:09:00 PM | Men's Basketball
RUSTON, La. – A stingy Bulldog defense left the Blue Raiders struggling to score for much of the night as Middle Tennessee fell 73-63 in Ruston.
Darnell Harris led the Blue Raiders with 20 points and added seven rebounds. Reggie Upshaw added his eighth double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Middle Tennessee (17-7, 9-3) shot just 39.7 percent on the night and went 5-of-21 from three. LA Tech (18-6, 7-4) recorded 12 steals on the night to stifle the Blue Raiders' offense while shooting 54.2 percent from the field.
Middle reeled off a 7-0 run early to take a 14-7 advantage against LA Tech with 13:38 remaining in the opening half, but the Bulldogs wouldn't go quietly.
Despite turnover troubles going both ways, LA Tech took the lead back, 21-20, with 5:04 remaining as the Blue Raiders experienced a rough patch on offense.
The Bulldogs would finish the turnover-riddled half on a 14-6 run to take a 27-24 lead into the locker room.
Harris got the Blue Raiders going in the second half with a mid-range jumper on Middle Tennessee's first possession, but LA Tech quickly answered.
The Raiders' offensive woes continued early in the second half, allowing LA Tech to open up a 10-point lead at the 15:39 mark.
Middle Tennessee went down by as many as 17 before Upshaw became a force for the Blue Raiders. The Chattanooga, Tenn. native scored back-to-back buckets just outside the 10 minute mark to provide a small spark.
JaQawn Raymond went back-to-back for the Raiders shortly after with the second of his makes being a three, but the Raiders struggled to slow the Bulldogs down any on the other end.
Down the stretch the Blue Raiders began to show some fight on the offensive end, but couldn't get a stop on defense to catch up to the Bulldogs for much of the second half.
With 1:14 remaining, Harris hit a 3-pointer to bring the deficit back to single digits for the first time since the 14:12 mark in the second half, but it wouldn't be enough in the end.
The Blue Raiders are back in action Saturday when they take on the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss at 7:00 p.m. in Hattiesburg.
