MT takes down Bulldogs and Bruins
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Middle Tennessee's women's tennis program went back out on the road for two matches in Birmingham against Samford and Conference USA foe UAB and came away with two more wins.
"Our girls took care of business this weekend," head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "We still have a lot to work on and we need to keep getting better with every practice and match."
Saturday, MT faced off against a tough Samford team. The Blue Raiders were able to get some momentum going in doubles action and capitalized on that momentum to win the match, 5-2.
Brittany Huxley and Giulia Squadrin took their match at No. 1 doubles in a tiebreak, 7-6. It took another tiebreaker to decide who would take the doubles point, but Costanza Magazzini and Alory Pereira came through with the 7-6 win at No. 3.
Darya Shulzhanok was locked in a tight match at No. 1, but she ultimately came away with a 7-6, 6-3 win. Huxley added another win to her impressive total early in the season with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2. Giving the Blue Raiders some strength at the lower part of the lineup, Sarah Sediri took the match at No. 6 by a score of 6-2, 6-4.
The Bulldogs were able to take their two points in the bottom half of the lineup, with Samford's Ellie Gerlach winning at No. 4, 6-4, 6-3, and Savannah Wood winning in a third set tiebreak, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6.
Luisa Zirilli completed the match vs. Samford with a third set win at No. 3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
When the Blue Raiders squared off with UAB, it marked the first meeting between conference foes this season, as well as Ramsay's first competition with a conference opponent.
Doubles once again proved strong, as Huxley and Squadrin delivered a 6-4 win at No. 1, followed by a 6-4 victory at No. 3 by Magazzini and Pereira.
Zirilli was first to finish her singles match, as she took a win at No. 3, 6-4, 3-0 (ret). Pereira cruised at No. 6 to a 6-0, 6-3 victory. Huxley delivered the clinching point for MT with a win at No. 2, 6-3, 6-2, and the match finished at 4-0 in favor of MT.
Next up for the Blue Raiders (6-4) will be a couple of matchups at the Adams Tennis Complex against in-state opponents. UT-Martin will face MT on Feb. 19 at noon. The Blue Raiders will then host ETSU on Feb. 20 at 10 a.m.
"We're looking forward to being home this weekend, and we're hoping for a nice crowd," Ramsay added. "I'm very proud of the team's effort this weekend, but we've got to keep the intensity up every day."
The Adams Tennis Complex will also be host to the 2016 C-USA Women's Tennis Championships on April 21-24.
