MT on the road again at Black & Gold Tournament
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee (2-3) softball heads out on their second road trip of the year as they travel to Montgomery, Ala. to participate in the Black & Gold Tournament, hosted by Alabama State.
The Raiders are looking to improve on last weekend where they went 2-3 at the FGCU Kickoff Classic, but played well enough to win at least four of their five games.
Megan Griffith led MT at the plate, as she hit .500 for the tournament with one double, two RBIs and seven total bases. Griffith also led with a .583 slugging percentage, and her three walks together with a hit-by-pitch improved her on base percentage to a team-high .625. Danielle Munoz hit the team's first homer of the season in the team's first game of the season against Michigan State. The next morning Carlie Jenkins followed with an inside-the-park round-tripper in an 11-2 win over Memphis.
Kelci Cheney was the Raider ace in the circle, as she went 2-2 in her four starts of the tournament with a 2.49 ERA. In 21.2 innings she allowed 10 runs on 18 hits, walked 10 and struck out eight. Pattie Taylor made three appearances and earned a save in MT's 4-2 win over FGCU. She allowed two runs on eight hits in 6.0 innings pitched for an ERA of 3.00. Megan Chocallo earned the start against Kent State and had a no-hitter going into the fourth, but the Golden Flashes were able to come back and beat the Raiders 4-3.
Middle Tennessee begins the Black & Gold Tournament against Nicholls State Friday at noon, followed by a match-up with the UMBC Retrievers scheduled for 4pm. Saturday begins at 11am with another game against UMBC, with a 5pm game with the host Alabama State afterwards. The Raiders will finish the tournament on Sunday against Nicholls State once again, scheduled for noon.
Nicholls State is 6-1 to begin the year and is coming off a two-game sweep of Jackson State. The Retrievers had a tough first weekend, as they went winless at the GCU Kickoff Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz. to enter play at 0-4. Host Alabama State Hornets comes into the tournament with a 1-6 record. The Hornets only win so far came in extra innings over Eastern Michigan 9-7 at the Trojan Invite in Troy, Ala. They have also lost in extra innings to Conference USA member Marshall, and are coming off getting swept this past week by Southern Miss, MT's first C-USA opponent this season.
