Four match win streak on the line
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After picking up three wins on a three game road swing, Middle Tennessee's women's tennis team returns to Adams Tennis Complex to compete against a pair of in-state opponents this weekend.
The Blue Raiders will start the weekend home stand by hosting UT-Martin on Feb. 19 at noon. The Skyhawks will be looking for their first win of the season when they play MT. Dennis Taylor, head coach of the Skyhawks in his 29th season, has 499 career wins as a head coach, all with UT-Martin.
"It'll be great to come back home and play two matches at the ATC in front of our fans," MT head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "UT-Martin is another one of those teams that will give us a fight until the end."
While they're winless in the young season, UT-Martin has played top competition. To kick off the season, the Skyhawks travelled to Knoxville, where they were defeated 7-0 by the No. 61 Tennessee Vols. Western Michigan and Auburn have also swept UT-Martin in the early going. The Skyhawks are coming off a 5-2 loss to Troy, in which they took the doubles point and won at the No. 2 singles spot.
East Tennessee State will bring their undefeated record of 5-0 into Murfreesboro to play UT-Martin on Friday night and MT on Feb. 20 at 10 a.m. The Bucs boast 7-0 shutout wins over USC Upstate and Appalachian State to begin the year, followed by 6-1 wins against Morehead State, Tusculum and Emory.
"ETSU is a very solid team that has gotten off to a great start to the year, and it should be a great match," Ramsay added. "If our girls can continue to compete the way we have the last few weeks, we will put ourselves in position to win and that's all we can ask for."
The Bucs are led by Lyn Yee Choo, who has posted a 4-0 record in both singles and doubles on the year. In the Jan. 5 ITA Ohio Valley Regional rankings, Choo was ranked No. 12 in singles.
Free admission is available for every match, and free T-shirts will be given out this weekend, while supplies last.
In addition to hosting UT-Martin and ETSU this weekend, the Adams Tennis Complex will be home to the 2016 Conference USA women's tennis championships on April 21-24.
