BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Middle Tennessee will look to continue its winning ways when it faces UAB for a C-USA showdown in a national television broadcast at Bartow Arena Sunday at 12 a.m. The game will be televised by ASN.
The Blue Raiders (17-7, 11-2) have won eight straight and 10 of 11 to put themselves in position to contend for the regular-season title. Middle Tennessee is one game behind UTEP for the lead in C-USA. UAB (13-11, 6-7) has also enjoyed recent success with three straight wins.
"UAB has a good team and they have been difficult to beat on their home court," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "They are athletic and have some very talented players. Coach (Randy) Norton does a good job and UAB will be well prepared. Our young ladies have had a good week of practice. They have been focused."
Exceptional shooting and stingy defense has keyed Middle Tennessee's recent winning streak. The Blue Raiders have shot for a much higher percentage in their last 10 games. They are shooting 48 percent from the field and 37 percent from 3-point range during this stretch. That is up from the .415 percentage for the season.
The Blue Raiders have shot 47 percent or better in six of the 10 games, including 53 percent or better in four of the last five games. Middle Tennessee showed tremendous ball movement in its most recent 74-44 win against Southern Miss, collecting assists on 25 of the 26 made field goals.
Middle Tennessee has enjoyed success on the road under Insell. The Blue Raiders have won five straight on the road and their eight road wins this season are tied for the most by any C-USA team.
Brea Edwards continues to lead the Blue Raiders with outstanding offensive tenacity. The reigning C-USA Player of the Week is second in C-USA in scoring with 19.2 ppg. She is also among the Top 10 nationally in three 3-point field goal categories – seventh in 3-point field goal percentage (.449), eighth in 3-point field goals per game (3.3) and eighth in 3-point field goals made (79). She is also 18th nationally in free-throw percentage (.87.1).
