Women’s Tennis Splits Home Stand

Netters beat UT-Martin, defeated by ETSU
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee's women's tennis team split their homestand against in-state opponents UT-Martin and East Tennessee State this weekend, moving their record to 7-5 on the season so far.
The Blue Raiders got the weekend started off with a 6-1 win over UT-Martin. The Skyhawks fought hard and made MT earn every point they won.
MT started the match off with a sweep of the doubles point. Brittany Huxley and Giulia Squadrin took their match at No. 1, 6-3. Courts 2 and 3 were close matches, but both fell in favor of MT. Costanza Magazzini and Alory Pereira took down their opponents at No. 2, 6-4, followed by a win at No. 3 by Sarah Sediri and Luisa Zirilli, who came back from down 4-5 to win their match 7-5.
Huxley opened up singles play at the No. 1 spot with a 6-1, 6-0 win in dominant fashion. Squadrin was locked in a tight match in the first set at No. 3, but cruised in her second set on her way to a 6-4, 6-1 victory. Sediri clinched the match for the Blue Raiders at the No. 6 spot in the lineup with a 6-4, 6-2 win.
At No. 5, Pereira took the win by a score of 6-3, 6-4. The Skyhawks got their only point of the match at No. 2 with a match-tiebreaker win by Sarah Candeloro, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (10-5). Magazzini battled the entire match at No. 4, where she closed out the 6-1 win over UT-Martin with a 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) win.
On Saturday, East Tennessee State claimed the match over the Blue Raiders, 4-1. The Bucs started off the match by claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3.
In singles play, Lyn Yee Choo of the Bucs took a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1. Marina Espana held off the second set challenge from Squadrin to take a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4.
Huxley gave the Blue Raiders their lone point in the match with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 2. Clinching the match for the Bucs was Ana Gerbasi at No. 6, with a 7-5, 6-3 victory in a tight match.
Zirilli took the first set in her match at No. 3, but dropped the second set and was down 2-5 in the third when the match was called. Magazzini lost her first set in a tiebreak and was leading 3-2 in the second set, but her match went unfinished.
With the win, the Bucs advanced to 7-0 on the season, the best start in the program's history.
MT, now 7-5, gets a break before heading back on the road to face UC-Irvine on March 8 and San Diego on March 11.
