MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – On a night where a share of the Conference USA lead was at stake, Middle Tennessee was outclassed by league leaders UAB in a 77-67 loss in front of 7,822 Murphy Center fans.
Giddy Potts and Quavius Copeland led the way for Middle Tennessee with 13 points each while Reggie Upshaw and Darnell Harris added 11 points each.
Middle Tennessee (18-8, 10-4) shot 45.9 percent on the night while going 9-of-22 from three, but was outperformed by a UAB team that played tougher in the contest.
UAB (22-5, 12-2) shot 61.4 percent from the field, 58.3 percent from three and 72.7 percent at the charity stripe, but it was their hustle that really made a difference as they won 14-of-18 50/50 balls and outrebounded the Raiders 32-20.
"That's a really good team we played tonight," Head coach Kermit Davis said. "The way they played tonight they could have beaten most teams in the SEC."
UAB came out hot, hitting their first five shots of the game to take a 13-6 lead just before the first media timeout. After stretching the lead out to 18-9, the Raiders came firing back with an 11-2 run that tied the game at 20.
The Blazers went back on top with five straight points before Potts hit a three and Buford came flying to the rim for a huge putback dunk to tie things up once again at the 7:27 mark.
The Raiders and Blazers then traded free throws to bring the score to 28-28 before UAB reeled off an 8-0 run heading into halftime.
UAB shot 52.4 percent from the field and outrebounded the Raiders 18-8 in the first 20 minutes to aid them to their eight-point advantage at the break, but only got hotter in the second half.
It wasn't far into the second half before UAB was able to extend their lead to double digits.
The Blazers scored on their first possession of the half and after trading baskets with MT a couple of times went on a 7-0 run to extend their lead out to 47-32.
The UAB lead reached its high point at the 13:02 mark when it took a 56-38 lead.
After trading baskets twice more, MT cut the lead back to 12 on a couple of occasions – most recently at the 6:56 mark – but the Blazers had an answer for every run Middle had in them.
Upshaw got the crowd back on its feet with a posterizing slam at the 3:56 mark.
The highlight reel dunk sparked the offense enough to get the score back within 10 points at 73-63 with just over a minute remaining, but it turned out to be too little too late for the Blue Raiders.
Middle Tennessee returns to action at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday when it hosts archrival WKU inside the Murphy Center.
