MT hammers Nicholls State 7-1
MONTGOMERY, ALA. – Middle Tennessee (6-4) finished off their stay in Alabama with another impressive win, this time 7-1 over Nicholls State (8-4) to avenge their opening loss on Friday.
"Our kids really played well the last four games this weekend," Head Coach Jeff Breeden said. "It is huge when two pitchers from our staff can pick up wins in a weekend, with all three of them performing well. I'm especially proud of Pattie Taylor, who picked up both wins yesterday. She is a leader on this team and it's exciting to see her play well.
"Dani Munoz had a big bomb today as well and Megan Griffith was solid both offensively and defensively all weekend. We hope for good weather this week and to carry the momentum to Central Arkansas next week. Thank you to all our fans who made the trip to Montgomery and all those who followed along at home."
The Raiders started things early Sunday as Precious Birdsong walked to open the game, stole second, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Kirstyn Cuccia brought Birdsong home with an RBI groundout and MT had an early 1-0 lead.
In the second inning the Blue Raider bats caught fire. Birdsong doubled to bring home Kristin Uselton and Cuccia followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Deja Portillo for a 3-0 advantage. Two batters later Morgan Harris singled and Birdsong crossed the plate, then Griffith reached on an error that allowed Carlie Jenkins to score the fourth run of the inning and MT had a 5-1 lead after two.
Nicholls State cut into the lead in the fourth as Payton Gremillion reached on a fielder's choice and Alexis Huss scored to cut the MT lead to 5-1, but that's the closest the Colonels came to the Blue Raiders all day.
Middle Tennessee added some insurance in the top of the fifth when Munoz hit her second home run of the season. It was a two-run shot to left field that scored Lauren Payne and the Raiders had their final score, 7-1.
Birdsong had a good day at the plate going 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs and an RBI. Uselton also had a 2-for-3 day as she added a run scored to the box score. Preseason All-Conference USA catcher Morgan Harris went 2-for-4 with an RBI and was superb behind the plate.
Kelci Cheney (4-3) earned the victory as she threw 3.1 innings of scoreless ball in relief. Cheney allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out one. Megan Chocallo made her first start of the season, but did not go a full five innings. She did impress in her 3.2 innings of work, surrendering just one run on five hits, walking two and striking out one.
Middle Tennessee got to Taylor Hastings (0-1) early, knocking her out after just 1.2 innings. In that time she allowed four runs on three hits and walked three of the 11 batters she faced to take the loss.
The Raiders will be back on the road next weekend as they travel to Conway, Ark. to take part in the Central Arkansas Invitational. They will begin the weekend Friday with matchups against South Dakota State scheduled for 11:15am, and a night capper against the UAPB Lions from Pine Bluff, Ark. scheduled for 6pm.
