Forward captures fifth such award
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee standout Alex Johnson has enjoyed a breakout rookie campaign for the Blue Raiders, and she joined elite company when she was named C-USA Freshman of the Week Monday.
It marks the fifth Freshman of the Week honor for Johnson and ties her with Blue Raider Hall of Famer Priscilla Robinson for most such honors in program history. Johnson leads the conference in such honors. Robinson won five Ohio Valley Conference Rookie of the Week honors during the 1990-91 season.
"I really don't know what to say," Johnson said. "I am honored and it is a compliment to be mentioned with a player who is in the Blue Raider Hall of Fame. The most important thing to me is helping the team win. That's what I strive to do. Team is first. I am appreciative of the honors and recognition."
Johnson is sixth in C-USA I field goal percentage with a .515 clip, and she is 10th in scoring in C-USA games with a 15.1 point per game average.
The 6-foot Johnson continued her remarkable run against UAB Sunday, scoring 29 points on 11 field goals, both career highs, to lead Middle Tennessee to a 77-72 overtime victory. The victory enabled the Blue Raiders (18-7, 12-2) to extend their season-high win streak to nine and remain one game behind UTEP for the C-USA lead.
"Alex has been steady and she just continues to work and improve," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "To be mentioned in the same company as former great Priscilla Robinson is quite an honor. You are keeping some good company there. There have been so many great players come through this program through the years so when you are at the top of any list you should feel pretty good about your accomplishment. "
Johnson's exploits were greatly needed in the win at UAB. After starting the game 0-for-5 from the field, Johnson connected on 11 of her next 17 shots. She scored 21 of her 29 in the crucial second half and overtime periods to lead the Blue Raiders back from a six-point deficit with less than five minutes remaining.
The Murfreesboro native scored 11 of her points in the fourth quarter and overtime and came up clutch down the stretch. Trailing 64-61 with 2:02 remaining in regulation, Johnson scored on a layup, and then she assisted teammate Ty Petty's go-ahead 3-pointer with 56 seconds remaining on an inside-out feed for the lead.
Middle Tennessee returns to action when it faces rival WKU Thursday at 8 p.m.
