Box Score
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After two rain delays of over 45 minutes each, the Blue Raiders prevailed Tuesday with a 9-6 come-from-behind win over in-state opponent Lipscomb. It was a contest full of clutch at-bats, with the Blue Raiders scoring all nine of their runs with two outs.
"I'm very proud of what we did today," head coach Jim McGuire said. "We showed a lot of toughness and a lot of grit.
"It's difficult to play under those conditions with the way the weather was and the way the field was starting to become."
Jake Wyrick drew the start for the Blue Raiders and didn't allow a hit through his first two innings, working around one-out walks in both frames.
Middle Tennessee got on the board in the bottom of the second frame when Kevin Sullivan hit an infield single to shortstop and Kaleb King rounded third and scored on an error.
Chaz Vesser then singled through the right side to move Sullivan to third before Riley Delgado walked to load the bases. Austin Dennis and Brad Jarreau were both hit by pitch to score Sullivan and Vesser before Lipscomb got out of the inning.
The Bisons struck back in the top of the third, touching up Wyrick for a couple of runs to cut the Blue Raider lead to 3-2.
Sam Alton came on to replace Wyrick in the fourth and pitched two scoreless innings before giving up the lead in the top of the sixth. Lipscomb tacked on three in the frame to go ahead 5-3 before lefty Cody Puckett came out of the bullpen to stop the bleeding.
Middle Tennessee struck back in the bottom half of the inning. King started things off, reaching on a fielder's choice and advancing to second on a wild pitch.
Sullivan smashed a double to deep left center to score King before Vesser knocked a double into the gap in right to score Sullivan and tie the game back up at five all.
Delgado then moved Vesser to third with a bunt single, allowing the backstop to score on a wild pitch to the ensuing Blue Raider batter and putting the lead back in the hands of Middle Tennessee.
Lipscomb led off the top of the seventh with a single up the middle. After a stolen base and a wild pitch, a groundball to shortstop scored the Bison runner and put the game in a deadlock once again.
As the game headed into the bottom of the seventh, rain began to threaten the contest. Kevin Dupree was plunked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Just as the rain really picked up Austin Sistrunk lined a single through the left side, scoring Dupree just before a 49 minute rain delay.
Coming out of the rain delay the Bisons were able to get out of the seventh, but a second rain delay that lasted 48 minutes came along before the eighth inning began.
Freshman AJ Spencer toed the rubber for Middle Tennessee to begin the eighth and delivered on the mound for the Raiders. Spencer sat down the Bisons in order in the top of the eighth before MT tacked two insurance runs on in the bottom of the eighth.
Spencer came back out for the ninth and retired the Bisons in order again, tallying three strikeouts across two innings of work and earning his first career save after giving up the lead in the ninth inning of his first career appearance on Saturday.
"This outing says a lot about him [AJ Spencer]. He basically had to go through two delays because he knew he was coming in. He had already started to get loose and had to go through the first delay and then got loose again before going through the second delay and it didn't bother him it all.
"He showed a lot of heart and toughness. He just went out there and went about his business and went right at them. These last two outings have shown he's got a chance to be a big part of our pitching staff."
Puckett earned the second win of his young Blue Raider career, both coming out of the bullpen in his first two appearances.
