Women first, men third after day one at C-USA Championship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After a day of events at the Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championships, the Middle Tennessee women's team is ranked first with 38 points, while the men's squad is ranked third with 33.50 points.
While the first day held many preliminary events, the Blue Raiders were able to secure crucial points in the relay and distance events.
In the men's 5,000 meter, Shadrack Matelong finished fifth in 14:28.99, while Amos Cheruiyot finished sixth (14:36.55).
The distance medley relay team of Alden Dixon, Ifiok Umoh, Sampson Laari and Geoffry Cheruiyot captured first in 10:03.17, securing a Blue Raider victory in the second to last event of the day.
The Middle Tennessee men's squad also earned points in the jump events, capturing five scoring spots between the long jump and high jump.
Atsu Nyamadi led a group of three Blue Raiders in the long jump, placing third after a leap of 7.16 meters (23-6). Vincent Okot and Desmond Anderson also competed for MT, finishing seventh (6.90m) and eighth (6.87m), respectively.
In the high jump, Jacob Patten cleared 2.10 meters for third (6-10.75), while Phillip Smith finished seventh after clearing 2.01 meters (6-7).
On the women's side, Middle Tennessee captured the distance medley relay and long jump titles.
Elizabeth Dadzie leaped 6.19 meters (20-3.75) to capture the long jump title for the Blue Raiders. India Hammond also scored for Middle Tennessee, finishing fifth after jumping 5.87 meters (19-3.75).
The team of Rhema Cheruiyot, Loveth Odia, Susan Aneno and Joshpine Kiptebeny earned the top spot in the distance medley relay after completing the race in 11:42.92.
In the 5,000 meters, Gladys David finished fourth in 16:42.42, while Hannah Maina finished sixth in 17:18.77.
In the multi-events, Nyamadi has earned 3,179 points, placing first in the long jump (7.13m) and the high jump (2.00m).
Dadzie, who is competing in the penthalon, is ranked third with 3,742 points and placed first in the 60-meter hurdles (8.72) and the long jump (6.19m).
Middle Tennessee continues competition tomorrow at the Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
