MT falls 62-51 at WKU
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Middle Tennessee players won't have to look hard to find two areas that proved detrimental in a 62-51 setback in front of 1,546 at Diddle Arena Thursday.
Despite making as many field goals – including one more trey – than WKU, the Blue Raiders (18-8, 12-3) tasted defeat for the first time in 10 games due to two factors – turnovers and free throws.
Middle Tennessee was guilty of 21 turnovers against WKU (62-51), which scored 17 points off of the Blue Raiders' miscues. The Hilltoppers also made it to the free-throw line 28 times to the Blue Raiders' 10. In fact, Middle Tennessee was only in the bonus in one of three quarters and was outscored by WKU, 17-5, at the charity stripe.
"You have to give WKU credit," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "They really did an outstanding job defensively. We have played some really good people this year and not many people have held us to (51 points) and forced (21) turnovers. That's about 12 more turnovers than you would like to have. Their coaches obviously did a very good job with their scouting report this week, and their players bought into the scout."
Ty Petty led the Blue Raiders with 18 points and dished out five assists. Brea Edwards tallied a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Alex Johnson just missed a double-double with 10 points and a career-high nine rebounds.
Kendall Noble led WKU with a game-high 23 points to go with six assists and five steals, and Tashia Brown added 13 points and seven rebounds.
Middle Tennessee led 32-30 at the half after holding WKU to 10 second-quarter points. The Blue Raiders played solid enough defense and limited the Hilltoppers to 10 first-half field goals.
It wasn't as though the Blue Raiders didn't play as well defensively in the second half but they were guilty of 12 of their 21 turnovers in the pivotal second half. WKU outscored the Blue Raiders 20-14 in the third quarter to take a 50-46 lead into the fourth quarter.
The final few seconds of the third quarter set the tone for the fourth stanza. The Blue Raiders led 46-44 following an Edwards' layup with 1:08 remaining, but the Blue Raiders gave up a turnover and missed a shot in the final 53 seconds that generated a 6-0 WKU run.
Caroline Warden's 3-pointer pulled the Blue Raiders to within 50-49 with 9:33 remaining, but the Blue Raiders were just 1-for-8 the remainder of the quarter and could not score consistently enough to rally against the Hilltoppers.
Middle Tennessee will return to action at Marshall Saturday. Tipoff is 12 p.m.
