Blue Raiders improve to 4-2
Box Score
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Tyler Troutt is locked in as a starter in the Middle Tennessee weekend rotation, but the senior lefty has been a stopper in his first two outings.
For the second time in as many starts, Troutt toed the mound following a Blue Raider loss and for the second straight time he delivered in resounding fashion to prevent back-to-back Middle Tennessee losses.
Troutt (1-0) was solid once again Saturday as he pitched six innings of shutout baseball to lead the Blue Raiders to a 3-2 win against Western Michigan at Reese Smith Field. Senior classmate Garrett Ring picked up his first save with 2-1/3 innings of sterling relief work.
"We needed a good start and (Troutt) stepped up again," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "He pitched around some runners early and then in his middle innings he was really efficient and kept runners off base. It was another good start, and I thought Ring really pitched well once again also. We needed those performances to get this win."
Junior shortstop Riley Delgado led Middle Tennessee's seven-hit attack with a 2-for-2 effort, one RBI and he coaxed two walks. Kevin Sullivan was 1-for-1 with a double, one run scored and one walk. Freshman Drew Huff also had an extra-base hit, going 1-for-4 with a double and one run scored.
Austin Dennis (1-for-3, walk), Brad Jarreau (1-for-3, walk, RBI), and Blake Benefield (1-for-4, run scored) also had base knocks for Middle Tennessee (4-2).
Delgado's clutch hitting staked Middle Tennessee to the early lead. The Blue Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Huff singled, moved to second on a walk to Sullivan and eventually scored on Delgado's two-out hit.
The Blue Raiders took advantage of Western Michigan's erratic pitching in the fourth inning when it scored two runs to take a 3-0 lead. Dennis coaxed a bases-loaded walk to score Benefield, who had doubled to start the inning. Jarreau followed with a walk to force home Sullivan with what would prove to be the decisive run.
Pitching with the lead, Troutt settled in nicely in the fourth and fifth innings when he retired six straight before giving way to freshman Carson Lester. Western Michigan (0-5) got to Lester for one run and chased him in the seventh.
Ring came on and got out of the inning to set the stage for the final stretch.
Western Michigan scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth and had the tying run on second with two outs when Ring got the final out to end the game.
Middle Tennessee will conclude its seven-game homestand against Miami (Ohio) Sunday. Reid Clements will get the start on the mound for the 1 p.m. start.
