Senior Night features 47 points from the three MT seniors
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Senior Night featured none other than the seniors themselves Saturday night as the Blue Raiders rolled past Marshall 83-74 for their 12th straight Senior Night win.
Perrin Buford, Darnell Harris and Jaqawn Raymond were each honored on the court before their final home game, and none of them disappointed during the night.
Buford led the way for the Raiders with 21 points, five rebounds and four assists. Harris added 18 points while Raymond finished with eight points, four assists and three steals.
Reggie Upshaw came up just short of his ninth double-double of the season with 14 points and nine boards. Aldonis Foote enjoyed the best night of his career, logging 10 points and six rebounds in 16 minutes of action.
Middle Tennessee (19-9, 11-5) drew even with Marshall (15-14, 11-5) in the Conference USA standings with the win.
The Raiders got back to their physical ways in the contest, outrebounding the Herd 36-27 and winning the second chance points 16-9. Middle Tennessee shot 49.1 percent from the field and hit 11 of their 21 three-point attempts in the contest.
Middle jumped out to an early 22-12 lead aided by three Darnell Harris three-pointers and a couple of triples from Edward Simpson.
Moments later Aldonis Foote joined the three-point party with his first trey of the season.
Perrin Buford added his second jumper of the game on the next possession and then drove in for a layup to extend the MT lead to 12 at the 8:08 mark in the first half.
The contest leveled off for a few minutes before seniors Raymond and Buford got buckets on back-to-back possessions. Buford's basket came on a dunk in transition that extended the Blue Raider lead back to 10.
Middle then came back down the floor and found a wide open Upshaw who knocked down the three. Raymond finished the half off with a couple of free throws to give the Blue Raiders a 49-34 halftime advantage.
MT came out firing in the second half as well. Foote scored five of the Raiders first seven points in the half to break into double-digits for the game.
Foote's second triple put MT on top 56-40 before Marshall reeled off a 16-0 run to jump right back into the contest and tie the game at 56 all.
Harris fired up a three and got it to go at the 11:34 mark to end the run and put the Blue Raiders up 59-56.
Middle Tennessee fought through the Marshall outburst as they crashed the boards like they were unable to do in their last two outings.
Harris corralled a key offensive rebound and got the second chance points for the Raiders to take a 69-63 lead with 5:49 remaining.
Just outside of the two-minute mark Upshaw nailed another three to push the Raider lead back into double digits at 77-67.
After getting back-to-back baskets, Marshall sent Raymond to the line twice in a row. The senior knocked down three of his four attempts at the stripe to make the score 80-71 with just one minute remaining.
After experiencing struggles from the free throw line all season and despite missing its top two free throw shooters, Middle Tennessee closed the game out by excelling at the line.
MT went 9-of-14 on free throws in the final five minutes to finish off the Herd and get back on track before their final two games of the season.
The Blue Raiders finish off the regular season on a road swing to south Florida, first facing Florida Atlantic Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
