MT turns back Herd, 79-73
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Six weeks ago one of Middle Tennessee's goals was to assure itself a bye into the quarterfinals of the C-USA Championships which requires a top four finish in the regular season.
With four players in double figures and playing a solid brand of team basketball, the determined Blue Raiders (19-8, 13-3) clinched no worse than the No. 3 seed in the upcoming conference tournament by virtue of its 79-73 win at Marshall Saturday.
It was one of the most balanced performances of the season for a Blue Raider team that has won nine of its last 10. Every player who participated scored and seven players had six points or more.
"What a great team win, and I do mean team," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "We needed the contributions of every player to pull this tough road win out. Winning at Marshall is not easy. They have a good team and have given teams fits in this building all season."
Brea Edwards continued her remarkable senior campaign with her seventh double-double of the season and 11th of her career. Edwards scored a game-high 16 points and pulled a season-high 14 rebounds. She played all 40 minutes for the ninth time this season.
Ty Petty continued to shine as one of the top playmakers in C-USA. The junior point guard scored 15 points and collected six rebounds. Petty also had eight assists and just one turnover in 40 minutes of action. Petty tied former great Chrissy Givens for third on the single-season assists list with 154.
Senior TiAnna Porter made her presence felt with a solid all-around game. Porter had a season-high 13 points on 5-for-6 shooting. She also blocked two shots in the final two minutes and collected two steals.
Alex Johnson rounded out the double-figure scoring with 12 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the field. Rebecca Reuter just missed a double-figure performance with nine points to go with three rebounds.
Abbey Sissom finished with six points and five assists, and Caroline Warden also tallied six.
Middle Tennessee started fast and looked to be on its way to a convincing win after jumping out to a 41-27 halftime advantage, but Marshall fought its way back and gave the Blue Raiders a fight to the finish.
Middle Tennessee's players were equal to the challenge and answered every comeback attempt with a clutch field goal. After Shayna Gore's layup cut the lead to 52-48 with 8:24 remaining, Warden took Herd standout Leah Scott off of the dribble, drove toward the basket and scored, drawing the foul in the process. Warden completed the old-fashioned three-point play to push the lead to seven, 55-48, with 7:59 remaining.
Marshall cut the deficit to five, but Porter answered on the other end for Middle Tennessee to push the advantage back to seven. Sissom seemingly buried the final dagger with her 3-pointer from the wing that provided a 63-52 lead with 4:15 remaining, but Marshall had one last run remaining.
The Herd got as close as four in the final minute before Warden put the finishing touches on the victory with two clutch free throws with three seconds remaining.
It was that type of game for a Blue Raider team with a refuse-to-lose attitude.
Middle Tennessee had another strong shooting performance, knocking down 51 percent of its shots (29-for-57). The Blue Raiders shot an uncharacteristic 63 percent from the free-throw line but they performed in the clutch with the game on the line when they converted 11-of-15 fourth-quarter charity tosses.
The Blue Raiders will return home to conclude the regular season. They face Florida Atlantic Thursday at 6:30 p.m., before playing host to FIU on Senior Day Saturday.
