MT drops second straight to Central Arkansas Bears
CONWAY, ARK. – Middle Tennessee (8-7) dropped another tough fight to the Central Arkansas Bears (8-5) 10-2 Sunday to close out the Central Arkansas Invitational.
Payton Grove and Kristin Uselton were bright spots for the Blue Raiders as they combined to go 4-for-5 at the plate. Dani Munoz and Megan Griffith each had RBIs in the contest as MT was able to get two runs on six hits.
Middle Tennessee struggled in the circle for the third consecutive game as Kelci Cheney gave up seven runs in 1.0 plus innings of work. Megan Chocollo came in in relief and finished out the game for the Raiders, but she allowed three runs on five hits in 3.0 innings of work.
Central Arkansas got the scoring started in the bottom of the first as Sarah Bigej singled with two outs, and Jessie Taylor followed with an RBI double for a 1-0 lead. Two batters later Lindsay Elliott hit a three-run homer to left center and the Bears had the early 4-0 advantage.
It was more of the same in the second inning. Sam Forrest doubled with runners on first and second to score Kate Myers. After a fly out and a ground out Taylor earned another two RBI double that scored Forrest and Amy Gunnells for a 7-0 lead.
The Raiders kept fighting as they got into the run column in the top of the third. With the bases loaded and no one out Munoz hit a sacrifice fly to right field that brought home Precious Birdsong. Griffith followed with another sac fly to score Kirstyn Cuccia and MT had trimmed the lead to 7-2.
After holding Central Arkansas scoreless in the bottom of the third, the Bears came out aggressive in the fourth. Taylor hit a two-run homer that scored Bigej and the lead ballooned to 9-2. Two batters later Elliott doubled, and then scored on Audrey Pratt's single and Central Arkansas had an eight-run advantage at 10-2.
Middle Tennessee was retired in order in the top of the fifth to end the game with the Bears prevailing 10-2.
The loss for Cheney drops her to 5-4 on the season, while Nicole Fullilove (1-1) received the win for Central Arkansas. Fullilove went 3.0 innings of work and surrendered two runs on six hits before Shivaun Landeros pitched two perfect innings to close out the game.
The Raiders will be back in action Friday as they travel to Orlando, Fla. for their final tournament of the season. They will participate in the UCF Tournament and play South Dakota Friday at 10 a.m. before the host UCF Knights at 2:30 p.m.
