Earns second national honor in as many days
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The honors continue to stockpile for Middle Tennessee senior guard Brea Edwards.
The Rockford, Ill., native was named one of NCAA.com's Top 5 National Players of the Week and was recognized in their "Starting 5" feature on their website. It marks the second time this season Edwards has been so honored by NCAA.com.
The most recent honor comes on the heels of Edwards being named the National Player of the Week by USBWA Tuesday. She also earned her third C-USA Player of the Week honor Monday and was also named Tennessee Sports Writers Player of the Week.
"I'm just overwhelmed," Edwards said. "I have to thank my teammates and coaches first and foremost. We work hard at practice and we have been putting up a lot of extra shots on our own before and after practice. I think that hard work is paying off. We moved the ball pretty well and that seems to get people open for shots. My teammates found me open in these two games, and I was able to knock down some shots."
Edwards has been knocking down shots with great regularity.
She enters this week ranked sixth in the NCAA for 3-point field goals per game (3.25) and eighth for 3-point field goal percentage (.451) and 3-point field goals made (65). Edwards has hit at least one 3-pointer in 34 straight games dating to last season.
The sharpshooting guard had one of her best games of the season against rival WKU to cap a splendid week for Middle Tennessee. Edwards scored 29 points and pulled a season-high 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double in the win against the Hilltoppers, which ended their 14-game win streak.
Edwards was 5-for-6 from 3-point range – all in the first half – to set the tone for the Blue Raiders. She was 7-for-10 from the field overall against WKU. It marked the fifth game this season where Edwards has connected for at least five 3-pointers with no more than four misses. She was also 10-for-12 from the free-throw line, including six-for-six in the final 39 seconds to seal the 83-75 win.
Edwards led Middle Tennessee with 17 points on 3-for-5 shooting from 3-point range in the team's win against Marshall. She averaged 23 points and 9.5 rebounds in the two games to help Middle Tennessee win its fourth straight and sixth triumph in seven games overall.
Middle Tennessee will face Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla., Thursday. Tipoff is 6 p.m.
