Teams battle Thursday at 6 PM
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Something will have to give when Middle Tennessee faces Florida Atlantic in a key C-USA game here Thursday.
The Blue Raiders (13-7, 7-2) have the second most road wins of any team in the conference with six and they have won three straight away from home. Florida Atlantic (11-9, 3-6) has won nine of its 11 games at home, where the Owls are 9-3.
Overall, Middle Tennessee has won four straight and six of its last seven. The surging Blue Raiders have been playing their best basketball since the outset of C-USA player; however, Head Coach Rick Insell says there is still much progress to be made down the stretch.
"I am happy with our team and how we are practicing and playing," Insell said. "At the same time, I still believe we can improve in several areas. What really pleases me is that our players share that same mentality. They are focused and working hard to improve their game."
It would seem the 3-point shot would be a factor in Thursday's game.
Middle Tennessee senior guard Brea Edwards is sixth in the nation in 3-point field goals per game (3.3), and eighth nationally in 3-point field goals made (65) and 3-point field goal percentage (45.1). Edwards has had five games this season where she has made at least five 3-pointers with four or fewer misses.
Edwards was named National Player of the Week by USWBA and NCAA.com earlier this week, as well as C-USA Player of the Week and Tennessee Sports Writers Player of the Week.
Florida Atlantic counters with the tandem of Ali Gorrell and Kat Wright, who have combined for 64 3-pointers between them. Six Owls have hit 12 or more 3-pointers and all but one player on the roster has hit at least one trey.
Florida Atlantic leads C-USA in 3-point field goals made with 200. The Owls average 10 treys per game. Middle Tennessee is fourth in the league with 6.6 3-pointers per game.
The Blue Raiders have a stronger inside game, which is led by the quartet of Alex Johnson, Gabby Lyon, Rebecca Reuter and TiAnna Porter. Johnson is averaging 10.2 ppg and Reuter has been one of the top rebounders since conference play began.
Tipoff Thursday is 6 p.m. (Central).
