Face four bowl teams and two SEC foes
C-USA COMPOSITE SCHEDULE
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee football will face four 2015 bowl teams, including the Mid-American Champion, and two SEC foes to highlight the 2016 schedule.
The Blue Raiders' 2016 schedule is being jointly announced today by Conference USA and Director of Athletics Chris Massaro.
"As I look at our home schedule two things really stand out to me," said Massaro. "Hosting Louisiana Tech and WKU will be great for our fans. Louisiana Tech is a team we had always wanted to schedule before we joined leagues and to have them come to Floyd Stadium with their rich history will be a lot of fun.
"Western Kentucky will come in as the defending conference champions and we all remember what happened at their place last season. That should definitely be an exciting game for us and one of the highlights to our 2016 schedule."
The Blue Raiders' 102nd season of football will include home dates against Alabama A&M, Louisiana Tech, WKU, UTSA and Florida Atlantic. The road contests will see the Blue Raiders facing Vanderbilt, Bowling Green, North Texas, Missouri, FIU, Marshall and Charlotte.
The 2016 alignment will feature seven teams in the East Division and six teams in the West Division. Charlotte, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, Old Dominion and WKU comprise the East Division, while Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Rice, Southern Miss, UTEP and UTSA make up the West Division.
Each school in the West Division will play every team in its division once for five games, while playing three cross-over opponents from the opposite division. Three schools in the East Division will play every team in its division once for six games, while playing two cross-over opponents from the opposite division. Four schools in the East Division will play five opponents in its division once for five games, while playing three cross-over opponents from the opposite division. The cross-division opponents, as well as the East Division non-plays are the same as last season, with the sites of the games being reversed. The 2016 schedule has 13 playing weeks, which provides for one open date for each team.
The season will get underway on Saturday Sept. 3 at home against Alabama A&M. It will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
The Blue Raiders will then hit the road two straight weeks to face neighboring rival Vanderbilt on Sept. 10 and then MAC Champion Bowling Green on Sept. 17. The Blue Raiders and Commodores met last year in Murfreesboro and this will be the first meeting in Nashville since 2005. MT has won three straight over Vanderbilt in Nashville.
The Blue Raiders and Falcons will be meeting for the first time in school history.
Middle Tennessee will then open Conference USA play at home on Sept. 24 against Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs defeated MT last season in Ruston, 45-16, but will be coming to Murfreesboro for the first time since 2000. LT leads the overall series 4-1 with the Blue Raiders' lone win coming in 2000.
The Blue Raiders will head back on the road Oct. 1 to take on North Texas in Denton. MT soundly defeated the Mean Green last year at Floyd Stadium, 41-7, but the outcome has been quite different the past two meetings in Denton. UNT won 59-7 in 2011 and 34-7 in 2013.
Following the lone open date, Middle Tennessee will return home to face rival and defending C-USA Champion WKU on Oct. 15. MT lost at WKU last season but have won five of the last seven meetings overall, including the last three in Murfreesboro.
Middle Tennessee will then head to Columbia, Missouri to face the Missouri Tigers for its final non-conference game of the year. In the only other meeting between the two schools, the Blue Raiders dropped a heartbreaker in Columbia during the 2003 season, 41-40, in overtime.
The Raiders will then begin a five-game conference stretch to close out the regular season with a road trip to FIU. The Blue Raiders have won three of the last four meetings and own a 7-4 advantage overall in the series.
Following a 42-7 win over UTSA in San Antonio last year to close out the regular season, the Roadrunners will make their first-ever visit to Murfreesboro on Nov. 5.
Middle Tennessee will then jump back on the road on consecutive weeks against Marshall on Nov. 12 and Charlotte on Nov. 19. The Blue Raiders and Herd have met five times with each team winning at home, including last year's exciting 3OT victory by MT in Murfreesboro.
MT and Charlotte met for the first time last season with the Blue Raiders winning 73-14. This will be MT's first trip to the Queen City.
The Blue Raiders will conclude the regular season on Nov. 26 at home against FAU. It will mark the first time MT has played at home on Thanksgiving weekend since the 2013 season.
