Raiders Hold Off Owls in 85-73 Win

Raymond Propels MT with Timely Second Half Scoring
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee held off Florida Atlantic in a competitive second half to seal an 85-73 victory in front of a crowd of 5,411 on Thursday.
Reggie Upshaw led the Blue Raiders with 19 points and eight rebounds. JaQawn Raymond broke out for 13 second half points to finish with 15 and added three steals.
With a couple of blocks in the contest, Perrin Buford moved into the top 10 in career blocks at Middle Tennessee, currently landing in a tie for 10th with 49 career rejections. He also totaled 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Middle Tennessee (16-6, 8-2) finished with 21 points off of 15 Florida Atlantic turnovers. The Owls (6-17, 4-6) shot 42.9 percent from the field but turnovers limited their possessions and limited their scoring.
The Raiders used a 9-0 run with five points from Darnell Harris and four from Buford early in the contest to open up a 26-15 lead by the 8:51 mark.
By halftime Middle Tennessee had racked up 14 points off of nine Florida Atlantic turnovers to help them to a 45-32 advantage.
The Owls opened the second half on an 8-2 run to bring their deficit back to single digits, but the Raiders were able to fend off the FAU surge.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Raymond extended the MT lead to 16 points at the 12:14 mark. Raymond drained his third three of the game just moments later and followed that with a layup.
Down the stretch the Raiders were able to keep the Owls at arm's length, maintaining a lead of at least nine points for the remainder of the game.
Middle Tennessee is back in the Murphy Center on Saturday when they host FIU at 6:00 p.m.
