MT defeated Chattanooga 6-1 on Thursday
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – From the start of doubles play all the way to the end of the final singles match, Chattanooga hung with Middle Tennessee, but the Blue Raiders were able to hold off their opponents and protect home court.
"This was a great college tennis match," head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "We needed a complete team effort and tonight we got one. I'm glad we were able to defend home court."
The first point of the match was won by the Blue Raiders in doubles action. Chattanooga's No. 1 doubles combo of Kayla Jones and Kelsey Coots was able to win their match, 6-3, meaning MT had to win No. 2 and 3 doubles to be ahead to start singles play.
They were able to do just that, as Costanza Magazzini and Alory Pereira took their match, 6-4, at No. 3. Following them were Darya Shulzhanok and Sarah Sediri at No. 2, winning 7-5 in the deciding match.
Pereira continued her night with a quick 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 6. That second set was the only set in the match that someone was shut out. "Alory has been a great addition to our lineup," Ramsay said. "She started off slow but had her way in that second set."
Next to finish was Luisa Zirilli, who won her first set in a tiebreak but cruised through the second set on her way to a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory at No. 3, giving MT a 3-0 advantage.
UTC's Jones got the Mocs on the scoreboard with a win at No. 1, but it took three sets to complete the match. Her final score was 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
Giulia Squadrin delivered the clinching point for the Blue Raiders, as she won 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 4. Magazzini was locked in a tight match throughout both of her sets, but was able to prevail in a second set tiebreak to seal the win, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). Brittany Huxley completed the match with another three set win at No. 2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-3.
"Each match was close and those three set matches could've gone either way. We've been talking about not counting on your teammates and focus on your own court and we did that tonight," Ramsay added.
MT (3-4) aims to continue their recent success on the courts when they travel to face Louisville on Sunday. They'll be looking for their first road win of the season.
"It will be a tough match. They are a solid team and have had a good start to the year," Ramsay said of the Cardinals. "Our schedule has been tough thus far and I'm hoping that has gotten us ready to continue playing a schedule that doesn't really let up.
"We have to keep working hard and put a big emphasis on getting healthy and competing day in and day out."
After a brief three-game road skid, the Blue Raiders return home on Feb. 19 to play UT-Martin. The Adams Tennis Complex will also be host to the 2016 Conference USA women's tennis championships.
