MT takes down Racers in double-header
MURFREESBORO – The best way to perform after a big win, is to go out and get another win. That's what the Middle Tennessee men's tennis team did Friday as they swept Murray State in a double-header. Just two days after defeating No. 46 Louisville, the Raiders kept the momentum going with 4-0 and 7-0 wins over the Racers at Adams Tennis Complex.
Middle Tennessee began a little sluggish as they needed all three doubles matches to finish to see who earned the first point of the day. The partnership of Luis Morillo Diaz and Dima Zyhmantovich dropped their match to Srdjan Trosic and Anjan Kashyab 6-4. But Gonzalo Morell and Ayed Zatar Cordero got the Raiders on the board with a 7-6 win over David Hess and Will True, taking the tie break 7-0. That meant MT needed Negre Miguel and Jacob Pugh's victory over Marcel Ueltzhoeffer and David Schrott 6-3 to seal the doubles point and an early 1-0 match lead.
The Raiders took control during the singles part of the competition though, as Cordero took down Trosic 6-1, 6-2. Morell made quick work of his opponent True with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. When Negre finished off Schrott 6-1, 6-1, it gave MT the 4-0 advantage they needed to win the match, so the other three singles matches went unfinished.
Middle Tennessee began the second match with much more momentum as Morell and Cordero defeated Villar and Trosic 6-1 in the first doubles match. Negre and Pugh also finished off Hess and True without much trouble 6-2 and the Raiders had the doubles point within just 25 minutes.
The singles point came almost as quick as Morell dominated Trosic 6-0, 6-1. Cordero finished off Schrott 6-1, 6-2 and Michael Apple took down Anjan Kashyab 6-1, 6-2 to give the Raiders the 4-0 match advantage to secure victory.
They finished out the singles matches in the second match, which gave Diaz a chance to defeat Villar 6-2, 6-1. Negre topped Hess 6-0, 6-3 and Zyhmantovich closed out the perfect sweep with a 6-1, 6-3 win over True. It marks just the second time this season that Middle Tennessee has defeated an opponent 7-0.
