Ten first-place finishes
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee track & field teams completed their lone home meet during the indoor season, claiming 10 first-place finishes in the six team event in the Murphy Center.
"Distance runners had a good day and so did most of the jumpers," said head coach Dean Hayes. "It was good to be at home and have a meet here in the Murphy Center."
The mile started off the running events for the Blue Raiders and it provided a show for the fans in attendance.
On the women's side, Agnes Abu battled with Chattanooga's Teghan Henderson with Abu pulling away in the final few meters to secure the victory in 4:58.04. Henderson finished in 4:59.32 claiming second, while MT's Rhema Cheruiyot secured third with her 5:06.53 time.
In the men's race, Eliud Rutto vaulted to first in the early laps inside the Murphy Center before eventually falling to second with a time of 4:09.11. Newcomer Sampson Laari raced to third in the mile, finishing less than two second behind Rutto in 4:10.52.
In a nearly all Blue Raider finish, the Middle Tennessee women's team produced a 1-6 place performance in the long jump.
Pershawna Williams led the six Blue Raiders in the event, jumping 5.94 meters (19-6) for first. India Hammond was a close second after leaping 5.91 meters (19-4.75), while Elizabeth Dadzie finished third (5.82m).
The remaining Blue Raiders in the long jump were Atarah Abdullah-Muhammad (4th/5.81m), Taylor Day (5th/5.63m) and Jessica Howell (6th/5.60m).
Hammond continued her strong start today by capturing the top spot in the triple jump, bounding 12.10 meters (38-8.5).
In the men's triple jump, Vincent Okot, a crowd favorite on his home track, bounded to first with his 15.46 meter (50-8.75) jump.
"Next week we will go back to Vanderbilt and that will be our last meet before the Conference USA Championships," said Hayes.
Middle Tennessee continues competition at Vanderbilt Feb. 12-13 before trekking to Birmingham, Alabama to the Conference USA Championships Feb. 24-26.
