Reuter's career high leads way
MIAMI – Team basketball has Middle Tennessee trending upward.
Middle Tennessee continued to surge with an 85-62 win at FIU here Saturday afternoon, giving the Blue Raiders (15-7, 9-2) their sixth straight win and eighth victory in nine games. The six-game win streak is Middle Tennessee's longest since winning 17 straight in the 2013-14 campaign.
With the victory, the Blue Raiders return home just one game out of first place in the tight C-USA race with seven league games remaining.
Much as it has been throughout the past nine games, team basketball carried the Blue Raiders, who had four players in double figures.
This time it was super sophomores Rebecca Reuter and Abbey Sissom leading the way. Reuter posted her first career double double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, both career highs. Sissom was equally impressive as she tied her season high with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 3-for-5 from 3-point range.
Alex Johnson continued her breakout freshman campaign with 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting, and Ty Petty rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11. Petty continued to dazzle as the playmaking point guard put together another stat sheet stuffer with eight assists, five rebounds and three steals.
"What an impressive performance by our Lady Raiders," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "Once again, we had different players stepping up and doing great things. When you play together and for one another great things can happen and that is what you are seeing with this basketball team. Coaching them is a pleasure and watching them play is really enjoyable."
The Blue Raiders also continued their outstanding shooting. The connected on 31-of-58 shots for a 53.4 percentage. They also poured in seven more treys. Middle Tennessee's second-half performance can better be described as a shooting clinic. It was 15-for-26 for 58 percent and outscored the Golden Panthers, 44-31.
"When you move the ball and execute your offense you generally get some good looks at the basket and that's what is happening," Insell said. "We have been executing our offense and the young ladies have finished shots."
Middle Tennessee's post players combined for 43 points, 16 rebounds and shot a combined 17-for-26 for 65 percent. In addition to Reuter and Johnson's brilliant play, another sensational sophomore, Gabby Lyon, also continued her solid play with eight points, three assists and three steals.
After a slow start defensively, Middle Tennessee buckled down and took control of the game in the second quarter.
The Blue Raiders shot 59 percent in the first quarter but trailed 23-21 after one frame as FIU blistered the nets to the tune of 64 percent in the opening quarter.
Tenacious defense by the Blue Raiders turned the game in the second quarter. Sissom's long 3-pointer capped a 9-0 run over a 3:20 span that provided a 10-point cushion. Reuter was also instrumental with eight second-quarter points. The Blue Raiders limited FIU to just two field goals on 2-for-12 shooting in the second quarter. They rode the defensive superlatives to a 41-31 halftime advantage.
The Blue Raiders return home to face Louisiana Tech Thursday.
