MT defeats Louisville 4-3 on the road
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Going on the road and coming away with a win over an ACC opponent is hard to do in women's college tennis, but that's exactly what Middle Tennessee did on Sunday.
"That was another great match today, and our girls showed up ready to play," head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "Louisville fought to the end. I'm very proud of our team."
The Blue Raiders were able to get a good start to the day by winning the doubles point. Costanza Magazzini and Alory Pereira opened the match with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles. Brittany Huxley and Giulia Squadrin were able to clinch the opening point of the match with a 6-3 victory at No. 1.
Darya Shulzhanok bounced back from a loss in doubles action to be the first to finish in singles play, winning 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot. Huxley found her groove and was dominant in singles action, defeating her opponent, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot.
Squadrin then dropped her match at No. 4 in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, making the match score 3-1 in favor of the Blue Raiders.
Delivering the clinching point for MT was newcomer Luisa Zirilli at the No. 3 spot in the lineup, as she took home a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory.
The Cardinals were able to take the two remaining matches, but MT left Louisville with a final score of 4-3.
"We looked like a veteran team today, but we still have a lot to work on," Ramsay added.
Next up on the schedule for the Blue Raiders will be a couple of road matches in Birmingham against Samford and UAB next weekend. UT-Martin will welcome MT back home on Feb. 19 at the Adams Tennis Complex. The new facility will host the Conference USA Championships on April 21-24.
