Blue Raiders go 2-0 on Florida road trip
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Jimmy Borendame's Middle Tennessee men's tennis squad is firing on all cylinders, as the Blue Raiders leave Florida with a record of 2-0 on the week, taking a victory over a Conference USA foe.
MT takes pride in doubles play, and it showed on Friday, as Ayed Zatar Cordero and Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore opened up the match with a 6-4 win at No. 1. Gian Issa and Miguel Negre Fernandez were able to put MT up 1-0 in the match thanks to a 6-4 win of their own at No. 2.
"Our doubles have been great all year long, just not solid on some deuce points," Borendame said after his team's 5-2 victory on Friday. "The guys did well in this tough environment today."
Morell was at the top spot in the singles lineup and did not disappoint, as he took home the 6-4, 6-2 victory. Negre won his match at No. 4 in straight sets as well, 6-3, 6-2.
Issa came away with the straight set victory at the bottom of the lineup, 6-3, 6-3. The final MT win of the day came at the No. 2 spot, where Dima Zyhmantovich won a tight third set to take the match, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
The Owls took wins at the No. 3 and 5 spot in the lineup, both in third sets.
Next on the calendar for the 12-3 Blue Raiders will be a matchup with the College of Charleston on March 19 at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center. Right around the corner is the MT Shootout, also on campus, March 25-27.
The match against College of Charleston will be "International Day" for all of MT's international student-athletes. Free pizza and a free tennis clinic after the match will be featured.
"We will take a few days off from tennis this weekend and get ready on Monday to prepare for a tough College of Charleston team," Borendame added. "We're looking forward to playing again at our great outdoor facility on campus."
