Jarreau's extra-inning blast lifts Blue Raiders
3/13/2016 6:27:00 PM | Baseball
MT wins in 10 innings
Jarreau just missed hitting for the cycle, going 4-for-5 with a home run, triple, three RBI and three runs scored. It was Jarreau's two-run circuit clout in the top of the 10th inning that proved to be the difference as the Blue Raiders (10-6) improved to 4-0 in extra innings.
Middle Tennessee won for the fifth time in six games and continued to collect timely hits and demonstrate resilience. The Blue Raiders rallied from a 6-1 deficit to capture the victory.
"First of all, what a great day for Brad Jarreau," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "He has been hitting the ball very well and leading our team and that continued today. He came through with clutch hits in key spots. That's what leaders do, and Brad is a great leader. I'm just proud of the team. They all battled and were resilient against a quality Kennesaw State team."
Freshman Austin Dennis also had a big day, going 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Dennis and Jarreau were the only Blue Raiders with multi-hit performances. Aaron Aucker, Kevin Dupree, Kaleb King, Austin Sistrunk and Vaughn Shapen also had clutch hits.
Garrett Ring (1-0) continued his mastery out of the Blue Raider bullpen and earned the victory with three innings of one-hit, shutout baseball. Relief pitcher Caleb Smith also was impressive with two innings of no-hit relief to give Middle Tennessee a chance to rally.
Middle Tennessee tied the game, 6-6, with one run in the top of the eighth and, no surprise, Jarreau was in the middle of the rally. He led off the inning with a single and went to second on a throwing error. Jarreau moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Aucker's one-out sacrifice fly to deep right field.
"That was a good job of hitting by Aucker," Jarreau said. "We just needed to find a way to get that run home and (Aucker) did a great job. This was a really good win. We had to fight back and we did. I'm proud of the team. We got down but we didn't stay down."
Everyone is human, including junior shortstop Riley Delgado, who was 0-for-4 and saw his hit streak end at 14 games. Delgado also made his first error in a college baseball game in almost two years. Delgado was error-free on his way to being named junior college National Defensive Player of the Year last season at Columbia State.
"Riley has been great at shortstop and a staple in our defense," McGuire said. "To think he was going to go all season without an error is expecting a lot. That's hard to do at his position but he's that good that you do come to expect him to make every play. I'll take him in the middle of the infield 10 times out of 10."
It didn't look good for Middle Tennessee early when the Owls (7-8) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings and a 6-1 advantage after four; however, the Blue Raiders gave themselves a chance with a four-spot in the fifth to close the gap to 6-5. King had a double in the frame but the big blow was Dennis' two-out, two-run double. Jarreau also had a RBI single.
The Blue Raiders won it in the 10th. With one out, Dennis singled and Jarreau followed with his first home run of the season, a two-run blast to left center.
Middle Tennessee will open a huge five-game homestand with Belmont Tuesday. First pitch is 6 p.m.
