MT doubles combo ranked No. 51
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. –Middle Tennessee men's tennis freshmen Ayed Zatar Cordero and Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore lead the charge for the Blue Raiders in doubles action and have recently picked up a national ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The pair of freshmen notched a national ranking of No. 51 on March 8. It's the first time a combo of Blue Raiders have been ranked since Ettore Zito and Victor Hoang were placed at No. 90 on April 14 of last year.
Zatar and Morell are 9-3 in doubles action, which leads the team. The pair spends the majority of their time at the No. 1 spot in doubles, posting an 8-3 mark at the top spot.
"Gonzalo and Ayed have made some major improvements in their overall games," MT head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "These two freshmen are just now learning how to play with each other and I'm excited to see these two continue to play together."
In collegiate tennis, doubles play decides the first point of the match and often sets the tone for singles action. The Blue Raiders have won the doubles point nine times in 2016 and are undefeated when they do so.
Middle Tennessee (12-3) will host College of Charleston on Saturday at 2 p.m. for International Day. MT held on to its team ranking of No. 54 when the latest ITA rankings were released on March 15.
