Cheney and Harris have big days for MT
CLARKSVILLE, TENN. – Kelci Cheney picks up her second shutout of the season and Morgan Harris went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs as Middle Tennessee (14-12) took care of Austin Peay (5-12) 6-0 Wednesday.
Cheney (10-6) went the full 7.0 innings and scattered six hits as she allowed no runs for the Lady Govs. Autumn Hanners (2-6) took the loss for Austin Peay as she gave up one run on one hit in 4.0 innings of work.
Precious Birdsong began the game with a bunt single, then stole second to put herself in scoring position for the rest of the Blue Raider lineup. Two batters later Megan Griffith reached on an error and Birdsong crossed the plate for the early 1-0 MT lead.
The one-run lead lasted until the sixth inning as Cheney on fire in the circle. In the bottom of the third Austin Peay put together their only real threat as Chandler Groves reached on a fielder's choice, then went to third on a double by Kacy Acree. But Cheney got Danielle Liermann to ground out to end the inning with no damage.
That turned out to be the only inning the Lady Govs advanced a runner past first base during the contest. Cheney retired 12 of the final 15 batters she faced from the fourth inning on to help preserve the win.
Middle Tennessee's offense didn't rest on their first inning run. Harris doubled with one out in the sixth to score Payton Grove and Austyn Whaley. With two out Birdsong reached on an error to allow Harris to score and increase the lead to 4-0. With Griffith at the plate, the Blue Raiders executed a double steal with Deja Portillo and Birdsong that allowed Birdsong to steal home. Griffith promptly followed with a base hit to score Portillo from second and MT had a six run cushion, 6-0.
With the win Middle Tennessee have now won five of their last six games. It is momentum they will take into this weekend in which they welcome Conference USA preseason favorite Florida Atlantic. The owls have not disappointed as they have begun the season 23-5 and are currently receiving votes in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Top 25 poll. The double header Saturday is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. while Sunday's game is slated to start at noon.
