Raiders set for national broadcast Saturday at 11
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee used the long ball to take an 8-6 win in the opening game of a three-game series from No. 15-ranked Florida Atlantic at Reese Smith Jr., Field Friday night.
Aaron Aucker, Blake Benefield and Brad Jarreau all went deep in the first two innings to stake the Blue Raiders (11-7, 1-0) to an early lead they would not relinquish on the way to the win in the C-USA opener for both teams.
Eight of the nine Blue Raider starters collected a base hit with Jarreau and Riley Delgado leading the way with multi-hit performances. Jarreau was 3-for-4 with one home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Delgado was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The biggest blow of the night; however, came off of the bat of sophomore Aaron Aucker, whose first-inning grand slam staked the Blue Raiders to a 4-0 lead just four batters into the bottom of the first inning.
"We had a great start and that really got us jump-started," Blue Raider Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "Our hitters had a great approach at the plate and we were able to get some big hits early. I was pleased with our pitching staff, particularly the bullpen and the job they did in the middle and late innings."
The Blue Raiders pounded out 11 hits, including six for extra bases, on its way to the win. In addition to Jarreau and Delgado's play, Austin Dennis, Kevin Dupree, Blake Benefield, Kaleb King, Kevin Sullivan and Austin Dennis also had base hits.
Relief pitcher Reid Clements (1-1) earned the win with three innings of strong relief work. Heralded relief pitcher Cody Puckett earned his second save with two innings of two-hit, shutout relief.
"Florida Atlantic is an outstanding hitting team," McGuire said. "I was pleased with the job (Clements and Puckett) did in relief holding them down."
Middle Tennessee got off to a strong start when the first four batters in the bottom of the first reached. Delgado, Dennis and Jarreau all singled and Aucker followed with a grand slam to erase a 1-0 lead and take a 4-1 advantage. Two batters later, Benefield hit his second career round tripper to push the lead to 5-1.
After the Owls (13-3, 0-1) added two in the top of the second, Middle Tennessee answered with two in the bottom half of the frame when Jarreau drilled his second home run this week, a two-run blast to give the Blue Raiders a 7-3 lead.
Tyler Troutt will take the mound for the second game of the series in a nationally-televised broadcast Saturday. First pitch is 11 AM.
