MT can't solve Florida Atlantic pitchers, get swept in double header
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee (14-14) falls back to .500 with a couple of tough losses to Florida Atlantic (25-5) Saturday. The Raiders fell 9-0 in game one and took a 3-1 defeat in the second game of their double-header.
MT struggled all afternoon with the Owls pitching. In the first matchup the Raiders were only able to get two hits off Florida Atlantic starter Kylee Hanson who allowed a runner past first base just twice in the contest. Game two was more of the same as MT knocked around starter Amanda Wilson for five hits, but were only able to plate one run in the loss.
Florida Atlantic began game one by loading the bases with one out. Back-to-back walks to Melissa Martinez and Tatum Buckley scored Delaney Rickey and Melissa Martinez with the first two runs of the game. Mickey Bell followed by reaching on a fielder's choice to bring home Emily Lochten and the score was quickly 3-0 Owls after half an inning.
Pattie Taylor settled down after that and held Florida Atlantic scoreless until the fifth when Melissa Martinez hit a three-run homer off the left field foul pole. The round-tripper doubled the Owls lead to 6-0.
Kylee Hanson kept the Raider hitters off balance all game long. Morgan Harris and Austyn Whaley were the only MT batters to get hits as Hanson (10-3) went 6.0 shutout innings and allowed just two hits while striking out six to earn the win.
Taylor (3-3) took the loss as she gave up six runs on six hits in 4.2 innings, but tied her season high with four strike outs.
The Owls scored three more runs in the sixth and increased their lead to 9-0, which ended the game after Middle Tennessee went scoreless in the bottom half of the inning.
It took Florida Atlantic three innings to score the second game's first run. Lochten grounded out with runners on the corners to bring home Rickey for the 1-0 lead. Two innings later Lochten homered with Carnesha Thompson on base and that increased Florida Atlantic's lead to 3-0 after the fifth inning.
The Raiders dented the scoreboard in the sixth as Payton Grove singled to right and Carlie Jenkins scored from second base to cut the Owl lead to 3-1. But that's the closest MT came as they struggled to get much going against Wilson.
Florida Atlantic's starter went the complete 7.0 innings and she allowed just the one run on five hits. Wilson's (8-2) win also gave her eight for the season as the Owls pick up win number 25 as a team.
Kelci Cheney (10-7) took the tough loss as she gave up three runs on seven hits and struck out three in 7.0 innings of work.
Middle Tennessee will be back in action Sunday as their series finale with Florida Atlantic has been moved to 11 a.m. due to the possibility of bad weather entering the Mid-State Sunday afternoon.
