MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee (14-15) fell to Florida Atlantic (26-5) 7-0 on a blustery and cold first day of spring at Blue Raider Softball Field.
The Raiders again struggled with Owl pitcher Kylee Hanson (11-3) who earned her 11th victory of the season. Hanson threw 7.0 shutout innings and held MT to just two hits for the second outing in a row while striking out eight.
Kelci Cheney (10-7) took the loss in the circle for the Raiders as she allowed four runs on six hits in 3.0 innings of work. Pattie Taylor came on in the fourth to pitch 2.0 innings and surrendered three runs on seven hits. Megan Chocallo pitched well out of the pen as she finished the game with 2.0 perfect innings, retiring all six batters she faced.
Florida Atlantic touched the board in the second inning as Mickey Bell singled to right field to score Tatum Buckley for the game's first run. Alex Miller followed with a triple that scored Sarah Bencivenga and Bell, then Delaney Rickey followed with a single to bring in Miller and the Owls had a 4-0 lead after two innings.
In the fourth Miller and Christina Martinez scored on an Emily Lochten base hit and the Owls lead increased to 6-0. One inning later Florida Atlantic added another run as Bell crossed the plate on Rickey's single to left center and the lead was 7-0.
Hanson kept the Raiders quiet at the plate again, except for Kristen Uselton. The sophomore and Murfreesboro native was 2-for-3 on the afternoon with a pair of singles.
The Raiders will be at home again Tuesday as they host in-state rival Tennessee State scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
