Duo earn first weekly awards of 2016
IRVING, Texas – Two Middle Tennessee men's track & field athletes were honored in the first Conference USA Outdoor Player of the Week awards as announced by the conference office today.
John Ampomah, the reigning C-USA Male Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year, was selected as the C-USA Male Field Athlete of the Week, while newcomer Sampson Laari was selected as the C-USA Co-Male Track Athlete of the Week.
"John Ampomah started this year better than last year, so it was a good start to his season," said associate head coach Keith Vroman. "Laari ran a personal-best in the first race of the year. Both competed in not perfect conditions as the weather was windy and cold."
Ampomah continued his success in the javelin from his 2015 campaign, where the Ghana native earned a NCAA Outdoor Championships second-place finish in the event. At the Alabama Relays, Ampomah tossed the javelin 76.97 meters (252-6) for first, while also setting the Sam Bailey Track & Field Stadium facility record.
Laari, a junior transfer Barton Community College, raced in the 800 meter and was a member of the 4x400-meter relay team.
The Kumasi, Ghana native captured first in the 800 with a personal-best time of 1:49.78. Laari ranks third in the NCAA after the first week of outdoor competition.
Laari along with Adeniji Adedamola, Ifiok Umoh and Hillary Rono netted first for the Blue Raiders in the 4x400-meter relay in 10:02.52.
Middle Tennessee continues competition at two separate meets this weekend, as a select group of distance runners are slated to compete in the Raleigh Relays Saturday with the rest of the two teams heading to Georgia Tech Saturday for the Yellow Jacket Invitational.
