NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Middle Tennessee men's track & field team is ranked 21st in the 2016 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Associations (USTFCCCA) Outdoor Preseason National Team Computer Rankings as announced today.
The Blue Raiders have four recognized on the list that uses preseason data that compiles the 2016 rankings. Eliud Rutto, Vincent Okot, John Ampomah and Atsu Nyamadi make up the Blue Raiders that are slated to score at the NCAA Championship meet.
Rutto, an 800 meter specialist, did not compete in the 2015 outdoor campaign due to injury, but the junior raced to a career-best 1:45.37 in 2014. The Eldoret, Kenya native's time would earn MT 32.64 projected points at the national meet.
Ampomah, the Middle Tennessee javelin record holder, set the school record at the Penn Relays with his 81.55-meter throw. The distance ranks as the best distance for any returning athlete at the NCAA DI level and would net the Blue Raiders 36.25 projected points.
In addition to Rutto and Ampomah, Okot and Nyamadi are slated to score at the NCAA Championships scheduled for later this year in Eugene, Oregon.
Okot, a senior jumper from Uganda, bounded 15.99 meters during the 2015 campaign, which is the 10th best returning distance.
Nyamadi, a multievents specialist, netted a career-best and Middle Tennessee record 7,567 points last season in the decathlon at the NCAA Championships, which netted Nyamadi a 9th-place finish. In the early projections, Nyamadi's total is the 12th best from 2015.
Middle Tennessee continues competition at the Raleigh Relays and the Yellow Jacket Invitational this Saturday, March 26.
