Men’s Tennis gears up for three home matches this weekend
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee will be looking to keep their momentum going at home at the MT Shootout, as they host UAB, South Alabama and Georgia State.
After starting the 2016 campaign out 2-2, the Blue Raiders have reeled off 11 wins in their last 12 matches. Now, they look ahead to hosting three quality opponents in the annual MT Shootout.
"These four teams are all very solid and have been nationally ranked either this year or last year," MT head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "We plan on taking each match very seriously. In years past, the first round could be fairly easy. I am very excited for each match and I expect each match to be down to the wire."
UAB will be the Blue Raiders' opponent on Friday. The Blazers come to Murfreesboro with a 9-6 record, including a 2-2 mark in Conference USA play. They've taken wins over Lipscomb, Stetson, and conference foes UTSA and Southern Miss. In the season opener, the Blazers were defeated by Alabama in a tight battle, 4-3.
Next for the Blue Raiders will be a showdown with South Alabama. The Jaguars have boasted wins over Stetson and Florida Atlantic. Florida State and Ole Miss both took down the Jaguars, 7-0, earlier in the season.
MT will close out the weekend with No. 66 Georgia State. The 10-4 Panthers have 4-3 wins over No. 65 Wichita State and ETSU. Alabama handed Georgia State a 6-1 loss in the season opener. No. 15 Oklahoma State hosted the Panthers in late February and eked out a 4-3 win.
The Blue Raiders have been brilliant in singles play, winning nearly 75% of their matches. Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore leads the charge with a 13-2 record, followed by Miguel Negre Fernandez with a 12-2 mark.
"The ultimate goal of the MT Shootout is to simulate the CUSA tournament where the top teams will need to play three consecutive matches versus strong teams," Borendame added. "This event will be a preview of what is to come in C-USA tournament time."
There are a couple of exciting promotions this weekend, as there will be a prize tennis court on Friday vs. UAB and a raffle when the Blue Raiders take on South Alabama on Saturday.
Live stats will be available for MT's matches, and updates on the entire event will be on Twitter, @MT_MensTennis.
