Raiders head to Alamo City for Easter Weekend
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee (15-15) is back on the road for Easter Weekend as they travel to San Antonio, Texas to take on the UTSA Roadrunners (11-18) in a three-game set that begins with a double-header Friday before the series finale Saturday.
The Raiders are coming into action following an impressive 3-0 shutout win over in-state rival Tennessee State Tuesday. Kelci Cheney earned the win with another complete game 7.0 innings and allowed just four hits in the contest.
Carlie Jenkins went 2-for-3 on the night and scored a run as MT was able to score a run in each of the first two innings. Precious Birdsong and Austyn Whaley also scored runs as the Raiders picked up an insurance run in the fifth inning. Dani Munoz, Payton Grove and Whaley all earned RBIs and they each earned a base hit in the game.
Last weekend the Raiders struggled against Conference USA pre-season favorite Florida Atlantic, dropping all three games. But they opened conference play winning two of three against Southern Miss and enter play this weekend 2-4 in C-USA and are currently fifth in the East Division.
UTSA had a slow start to their year as they're only 11-18 on the season. But the Roadrunners have been on fire since entering C-USA play. They're 5-1 through the first two weekends in conference play and currently lead the West Division by 1.5 games over UAB.
Middle Tennessee is trying to find someone to step up in the absence of Kirstyn Cuccia, who will miss the rest of the season with a broken leg suffered in the Southern Miss series. Cuccia still has the team's best batting average at .372, but not far behind are Munoz (.329), Kristin Uselton (.310), Grove .306, and Cuccia's current right field replacement Randi Cookus. Cookus currently hits .333, but has far fewer at bats than to this point of the season.
Munoz leads the team with six home runs on the year and her 20 RBIs currently rank second on the team. Birdsong is tied for seventh in C-USA with 25 runs scores and is currently fourth in the conference with 16 stolen bases as she leads the team in each category.
Cheney has been the leader in the circle for MT this season as she is 11-8 with a 3.30 ERA in 22 appearances. Cheney's 20 starts lead the team as well as her 118.2 innings pitched.
UTSA is coming into the weekend on the heels of a 6-5 loss to Baylor at home Tuesday. This past weekend they took two of three at Charlotte and opened C-USA play two weekends ago with a three-game sweep of North Texas in San Antonio.
The Roadrunners are led at the plate by Jade Smith who's hitting .333 on the year. Randee Crawford's eight homers and 13 RBIs lead the team as well and her eight round-trippers are tied for second in C-USA.
Lizzy Fox has been the best in the circle for UTSA this season as she has a 4-6 record with a 2.87 ERA. Chelsea Parker's 14 starts are the most on the team as she has an ERA of 3.53 with a record of 4-9.
Friday's double-header will begin at 4 p.m. and Saturday's game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch. Check out live stats here
