MT drops first game 7-1, wins second 18-0
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – It was a tale of two games for Middle Tennessee (16-16) softball Friday as they split their double header with UTSA (12-19), dropping the first game 7-1 before dominating game two 18-0.
Game one began slowly as no one scored in the first two innings. Blue Raider starter Kelci Cheney retired six of the first seven batters she faced. But things got rough in the third. With one out, Randee Crawford hit a three-run homer. Tess Soefje and Erica Sanchez followed with a pair of RBI singles and the Roadrunners took a 7-0 lead after three innings.
Dani Munoz came back in the fourth with her team-leading seventh home run on a blast to left center that cut the lead to 7-1. But that's the last run that scored in the game as UTSA held on for the win.
Cheney (11-9) took the loss as she last just 2.2 innings and allowed seven runs on seven hits. Pattie Taylor did well in relief as she threw 3.1 shutout innings and gave up just one hit. Munoz homer helped her to a 1-for-2 game. Morgan Harris had a double and Precious Birdsong earned a single, but those were only other hits in the game for MT as they were only able to get three hits off Lizzy Fox.
Fox (5-6) went the distance as she allowed just three hits, a run and struck out four as she earned her fifth win of the season. The Roadrunners picked up eight hits from seven different players as their offense was balanced the entire first game.
Game two was completely different for the Raiders as Austyn Whaley got things started early a three-run homer in the first inning for the early 3-0 lead.
The third inning was another lucrative inning for MT as Carlie Jenkins walked with the bases loaded to score Munoz. Kristen Uselton followed by reaching on a fielder's choice that allowed Whaley to score on an error and Payton Grove to subsequently cross the plate. Megan Griffith reached on another fielder's choice that allowed Jenkins to score and after the top of the third the Raiders were on top 4-0.
Megan Chocallo (2-4) drew the start for Middle Tennessee and was superb in the circle as she allowed just four hits in 7.0 shutout innings. Chocallo struck out three and walked only two as she blazed through the Roadrunner lineup.
The top of the seventh inning turned out to be the Raiders' best single inning of the season. When all was said and done, MT had scored 11 runs on nine hits and had an 18-0 lead with just three outs to go.
Middle Tennessee will finish their series in the Alamo City Saturday as they will take on UTSA at 1 p.m. in San Antonio.
