Record falls in Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. – In the first of two meets for the Middle Tennessee track & field teams, one record was broken at the Raleigh Relays Friday night.
Sampson Laari, a junior from Kumasi, Ghana, finished 28th in the 5,000 meter, breaking a seven-year old Middle Tennessee outdoor record. Laari finished the 5K in 14:16.14, eclipsing the previous school record of 14:17.19, which was set by Festus Chemaoi.
"Sampson (Laari) continues to impress, running his first 5K for MT and breaks the school record," said associate head coach Keith Vroman.
Also competing in the 5k in Raleigh was Hillary Rono and Geoffry Cheruiyot and the duo finished 39th (14:16.14) and 48th (14:36.20), respectively.
"In near perfect conditions both the men and women look poised to have a great outdoor track season," said Vroman.
Shadrack Matelong and Alden Dixon competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with Matelong earning the best finish for the Blue Raider men's squad. Matelong finished 13th in the event, completing the steeplechase in 9:21.47. Dixon finished 18th in 9:24.40.
At the Yellow Jacket Invitational, Eliud Rutto was the lone Blue Raider to compete Friday night, capturing first in 14:47.45 in the 5K.
In the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, Josphine Kipetebeny netted the best finish for any Blue Raider at the Raleigh Relays, placing sixth in 10:30.39, while Rhema Cheruiyot finished the steeplechase in 11:11.25 for 24th.
In the 5,000 meter, Gladys David finished 14th with a personal-best 16:42.56, while Hannah Maina finished 28th in 17:07.86.
Middle Tennessee continues competition tomorrow at the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta, Ga.
