MT has to go extras, but beats Roadrunners in series finale
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The wildness continued Saturday for Middle Tennessee (17-16, 4-5) as Carlie Jenkins hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to help the Raiders defeat UTSA (12-20, 6-3) 7-5 and take the series 2-1.
With the game tied 2-2 in the top of the sixth, Morgan Harris scored on an illegal pitch. Two batters later, Jenkins grounded out to bring home Austyn Whaley and Kristen Uselton followed with a base hit to score Payton Grove and the Raiders had control up 5-2.
The lead lasted until the bottom of the seventh when Zoe Bacon came up with two on and two out. She took a 3-1 pitch from Pattie Taylor and hit it over the center field wall to tie the game and send it to extra innings.
Middle Tennessee was not interested in spending much extra time in the Alamo City, however. Payton Grove walked on five pitches to open the eighth to bring up Jenkins. The Raiders seventh hitter did not waste much time as she took a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall to give the Raiders a 7-5 lead.
Megan Chocallo retired the first two batters in the bottom of the eighth before giving up a double to Taylor Oberg. But Chocallo induced a fly out to center by Jade Smith to retire the Roadrunners and preserve the 7-5 win.
Kelci Cheney and Lizzy Fox were locked in a pitcher's duel as no one got past second base through the first four innings.
The fifth started with a bang for Middle Tennessee as Austyn Whaley hit her fourth homer of the season. The solo shot to left center gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead, but MT was not done yet. Later in the inning Precious Birdsong doubled down the left field line to bring home Jenkins and MT led 2-0 after four and half innings.
In the bottom of the fifth UTSA quickly got on the scoreboard as Randee Crawford doubled to left to score Kendall Burton and Smith. After five innings the game was tied up 2-2.
Middle Tennessee will be on the road again Wednesday as they travel to Nashville to take on the Tennessee State. The Raiders beat the Tigers 3-0 last Tuesday in Murfreesboro.
