MT defeats VCU, Memphis in last road trip

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee women's tennis improved to 11-7-1 on the year after taking two wins in their final road trip of the 2016 season.

The Blue Raiders kicked off the weekend by taking down VCU, 4-1, on Saturday. MT started off doubles action with a 6-2 win at No. 2 by Sarah Sediri and Darya Shulzhanok. Brittany Huxley and Giulia Squadrin gave MT the first point in the match after winning at No. 1, 7-5.

After the Rams got a point with a singles win, MT took control and closed out the match. Alory Pereira was dominant at No. 4, as she cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Costanza Magazzini's match at No. 5 was close early, but she pulled away to win, 6-4, 6-3.

Huxley clinched the win for the Blue Raiders with a three-set win at No. 2. Sediri and Shulzhanok were unable to finish their singles matches, but were both leading in the third set.

MT's momentum from Saturday continued on Sunday against Memphis, as they defeated the Tigers, 4-3. The Blue Raiders jumped out to an early lead in the match by sweeping doubles.

Squadrin notched a singles win at No. 6 to make it 2-0, in favor of the Blue Raiders. Memphis got on the board with a win at No. 3, but Huxley took care of her match at No. 2, although it took a second set tiebreak.

Memphis won at the top spot in the lineup, but Pereira clinched the win for MT.

The Blue Raiders improved to 2-2 at neutral sites with their win over VCU and 4-4-1 on the road after taking down Memphis. MT returns home to close out the season against Alabama A&M (April 9) and WKU (April 16) before hosting the Conference USA Championship on April 21-24.

MT head coach Charlie Ramsay was with his family this weekend, as his wife, Amanda, gave birth to their second daughter on Friday.
