Carlie Jenkins and Megan Chocallo win program's first C-USA weekly awards
IRVING, TEXAS – After a great weekend on the road which saw Middle Tennessee take two of three from UTSA and a midweek shutout of Tennessee State, Conference USA has announced Carlie Jenkins has won Co-Player of the Week and Megan Chocallo has earned Co-Pitcher of the Week for C-USA.
The awards are the first for each player and the first C-USA weekly superlative awards for the Middle Tennessee softball program since joining the conference for the 2013-14 season. Lindsey Vander Lugt was the last Blue Raider to win a conference Pitcher of the Week award in 2010 from the Sun Belt. And 2008 saw Justine Cerda win the program's last Player of the Week honor, also from the Sun Belt.
Jenkins led the team with a .615 batting average during the week. In the Raiders' three wins, Jenkin's average bumped up to .800 with five RBIs, a double, and what turned out to be the game-winning home run in extra innings at UTSA Saturday. Jenkins slugging percentage was nearly 1.000 at .923 and her on-base percentage was .667.
"Carlie hit the ball extremely well all week," Head Coach Jeff Breeden said. "She had several key backside hits for us. Of course the two-run homer in the eighth [Saturday against UTSA] was huge."
Chocallo only received two appearances and one start, but she made the most of them as she threw 8.1 shutout innings. Chocallo earned the victory in MT's 18-0 win over UTSA in the second game of Friday's double header and picked up another win out of the bullpen as the Raiders took down the Roadrunners in extra innings Saturday.
"Megan really allowed us to stay in the games this week and allowed our offense to win," Breeden stated. "She is very good when she is on and this week she was on."
Breeden added, "Our program is very excited that our players and team can get recognition from our conference. Each weekend is a dog fight in our league. For our kids to be mentioned with the other winners of these awards is an honor for us."
The Raiders defeated Tennessee State Tuesday 3-0, a team they will see again this week on Wednesday in Nashville. With their second series win in their first three C-USA series, MT is currently 4-5 in conference play and tied for fourth in the East Division with FIU. The girls in blue will play two mid-week games this week as they face TSU Wednesday, then host Austin Peay Thursday before taking this weekend off.
