MT Drops Midweek Contest at Tennessee, 9-2
3/29/2016 8:38:00 PM | Baseball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A couple of early home runs gave Tennessee all the run support they would need Tuesday night as the defeated Middle Tennessee 9-2 in Knoxville.
Austin Dennis, Kevin Dupree and Chaz Vesser all notched a couple of hits apiece as the Blue Raiders (12-13) totaled 10 hits on the night, just one shy of Tennessee (15-9).
However, MT failed to chase runners home early on to keep pace with the Volunteers as they plated many of their early runners.
Outside of a solo home run in the bottom half of the first, Sam Alton didn't allow another base runner through the first two and two-thirds innings.
The right-handed senior gave up back-to-back singles to left field with two outs in the third before the Volunteers' number three hitter drilled his second homer of the day to put Tennessee up 4-0.
Middle Tennessee threatened in the second and third innings, putting a runner on second with one out in both frames before being retired without scoring a run.
The Blue Raiders got a couple of baserunners in the top of the fourth with no one out, but once again failed to move them around and get on the board.
After getting another run on a Blue Raider error in the fourth, Tennessee really opened up the gap with three runs in the fifth.
Dennis and Brad Jarreau led off the sixth with back-to-back singles. A couple of batters later Dennis got the Raiders on the board, scoring from third on a single by Dupree.
Tennessee matched the Blue Raiders with a run in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 9-1 heading into the seventh inning.
Freshman Andy Wright came on in the seventh inning and pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts for MT before Cody Puckett did the same in the eighth.
A trio of walks and a sac fly by Shane Connahan got another run on the board in the ninth before the Vols shut the door.
Middle Tennessee welcomes Conference USA foe Rice to Reese Smith Jr. Field next for a weekend series which begins Friday at 6:00 p.m.
