MT shuts down Tennessee State for second time in eight days
NASHVILLE, TENN. – Kelci Cheney and Middle Tennessee (18-16) shutout in-state rival Tennessee State (7-26) for the second time in eight days as they beat the Tigers 1-0 at Tiger Field Wednesday.
Cheney (12-9) earned another impressive win as she shut out the Tigers for 7.0 more innings, running her season total to 14.0 against the team from Nashville. Cheney also earned six strike outs, the most since she struck out seven South Dakota Coyotes on March 4.
Middle Tennessee struggled to get much off Tiger starter Lauren Powell early. Powell retired nine of the first 11 Blue Raiders she faced, allowing just singles to Deja Portillo and Precious Birdsong.
Morgan Harris led off the fourth with an infield single, then stole second to give MT a runner in scoring position. Two batters later Austyn Whaley ripped a base hit just over the outstretched glove of Joselynn Yates at second base and Harris scored the go-ahead run.
The Raiders appeared to have things set for a big inning in the fifth as Lauren Payne singled just off the glove of Chelsea Buchanan at third. But Abi Stephens put a stop to it as she made a nice play in left field to rob Precious Birdsong of a hit, then doubled off Payne at first.
Cheney made the one run hold as she allowed no Tiger past second base, just eight days after allowing no Tiger past first.
Middle Tennessee now has some time off as their game scheduled for Thursday at home with Austin Peay has been postponed due to the likelihood of bad weather visiting the mid-state area. The game's tentative re-scheduled date is April 12, but stay tuned to GoBlueRaiders.com for more information. Without a weekend series this weekend, the Raiders are off until Tuesday when they travel to Orangeburg, South Carolina to take on South Carolina State in a double header.
