Middle Tennessee plays host to FIU Saturday, 2 PM
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee will look to clinch the No. 2 seed in the upcoming C-USA, and send its seniors out on a winning note on Senior Day when the Blue Raiders play host to FIU Saturday at 2 p.m.
It will mark the final regular-season home games for seniors Brea Edwards, TiAnna Porter and Caroline Warden, as well as dedicated managers Eric Brewton, Jr., and Jordan Romine. The Blue Raiders (20-8, 14-3) can clinch the No. 2 seed for the C-USA Championship with a victory, as well.
When Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell is asked about this Senior Class he tends to become emotional.
"We do our Senior Day festivities following the game because we want the student-athletes to remain focused for the game," Insell said. "This is a big game for us in terms of the conference and seeding, but it is also a big game because we want to send these seniors out with a win. They have impacted our programs in different, yet very meaningful, ways. I love every one of these seniors. They mean a lot to our program. They mean a lot to me. I am happy to be part of their team."
Perhaps the greatest attribute provided by the trio of seniors is an often-overlooked quality – leadership. That quality was what the Blue Raiders needed most when they were sitting with two conference losses early in the league race and facing adversity.
Fifteen games later the Blue Raiders are 13-2 and have earned a double-bye in the C-USA Championships.
"That happens because of the leadership provided by those seniors," Insell said. "It would have been easy to fold and lay down but these seniors would have none of that. It kind of fits with their personality, their road to get here and then their overall attitude once they got here to Middle Tennessee. There is no quit in these young ladies."
The Blue Raiders have won five straight at home and looking to continue their momentum into the C-USA Championships, which begin next week in Birmingham. Middle Tennessee will not play until Thursday night, either at 5 or 7:30 p.m., at Bartow Arena.
