Box Score
MOBILE, Ala. – Middle Tennessee took the opening game of a three-game series from South Alabama by taking down reigning National Pitcher of the Week Kevin Hill for a 7-4 win here Friday night.
Junior standout Riley Delgado led an 11-hit attack with a 3-for-5 performance that included two runs scored and one RBI. Brad Jarreau and Kevin Sullivan also had multi-hit games for the Blue Raiders (5-4).
Jarreau was 2-for-4 with one RBI and junior first baseman Kevin Dupree was outstanding, going 1-for-4 but driving in three runs and drilling a double. Sullivan was 2-for-4 with one run scored. The Blue Raiders got to Hill for six runs, five earned, in his 6-1/3 innings. They scored more runs off of him in the first three innings (3) than he had given up in his first two starts combined.
"We had some timely hits and the guys really battled against a top-flight pitcher," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "I am really proud of how we not only battled against (Hill) but also how we battled back after giving up the lead."
Middle Tennessee senior ace Nate Hoffmann was up to the task against one of the nation's top hurlers in Hill. Hoffmann provided five innings of strong baseball. He allowed three earned runs and took the no-decision but his efforts provided the Blue Raiders a chance at victory. Hoffmann provided his team the best chance at victory. Hoffmann pitched five innings, struck out four and walked one.
"Nate was really good," McGuire said. "He did a good job of mixing his pitches and getting ahead in the count. He gave us the type of pitching performance we needed to match up and get the win."
Senior Sam Alton (1-0) earned his first win, but it was transfer Cody Puckett who continued to shine. Puckett (2-0) earned his first career save with three innings of one-hit shutout baseball.
Puckett struck out four in his three-inning stint, including getting the final out of each of his three innings via the strikeout.
Middle Tennessee gave up two runs in the bottom of the fifth and another in the sixth as South Alabama (8-2) erased a 3-1 deficit and took a 4-3 lead, but the Blue Raiders came off of the deck with three in the top of the seventh.
Kaleb King reached on an error to start the inning, and then Sullivan laid a perfect bunt down the first-base line and was rewarded for his efforts by beating it out for a base hit to put runners at first and second. After the Blue Raiders failed to advance the runners with a failed bunt attempt, Delgado came through in the clutch.
The junior shortstop singled to score King, and Jarreau followed with a clutch hit to plate Sullivan and provide a 6-4 lead. Delgado would later come around to score to push the advantage to 7-4.
Middle Tennessee went on top 2-0 in the top of the first when Dupree doubled in two runs. South Alabama eventually took the lead and led 4-3 after six innings; however, Middle Tennessee was not finished.
The Blue Raiders came off of the deck with three in the seventh and Puckett made it stand for the win.
Middle Tennessee will attempt to win the series when it faces South Alabama Saturday. First pitch is 2 p.m.
