MT turns back FIU, 77-55
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee sent its seniors out in style as the Blue Raiders rolled past FIU, 77-55, in front of 3,707 fans on Senior Day at Murphy Center.
The Blue Raiders (21-8, 15-3) clinched the No. 2 seed in the C-USA Championships with the win and will play in the quarterfinals at Bartow Arena Thursday at 5 p.m.
Fittingly, senior Brea Edwards led the way with her eighth double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds. She was three assists shy of just the second triple double in school history, finishing with a career high seven helpers and no turnovers in 38 minutes of action.
Edwards connected on four 3-pointers to move past Kortni Jones and into second on the single-season list with 88.
Seniors TiAnna Porter and Caroline Warden also had a memorable final home game. Porter scored seven points and pulled five rebounds, and Warden had three points, three assists and three rebounds.
"All three of those seniors are special people and they mean a great deal to this team and this program," Blue Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "They deserved to go out the way they did, with a win and with all of them having good games and contributing to the victory. It was a big win, too, because we clinched that two seed and go into the tournament with some momentum."
Four Blue Raiders scored double figures. In addition to Edwards' 20 points, Ty Petty tallied 13 points and five assists. The five helpers give Petty 162 for the season, moving her past Kortni Jones and into second on the single-season assists list.
Freshman Alex Johnson capped a sensational rookie regular season with 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting to go with six rebounds. Sophomore Abbey Sissom tallied 10 points on the strength of three 3-pointers. Sophomore Rebecca Reuter provided six points and three caroms.
Middle Tennessee jumped out to a 21-12 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. The Blue Raiders maintained a double-figure lead most of the remainder of the game. They won the battle of the boards by a resounding 43-26 margin, and they dished out 19 assists on 28 field goals with just 11 turnovers.
