Edwards First-Team, Petty Second-Team, Johnson All-Freshmen
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Three players who greatly impacted Middle Tennessee's run to the No. 2 seed in the C-USA Championship and a 21-win season have been voted to all-conference teams as announced by the league office today.
Senior guard Brea Edwards has been voted first-team All-Conference USA, junior guard Ty Petty has been named to the All-Conference USA second team, and freshman Alex Johnson has been selected to the All-Freshmen team.
Teams are selected by a panel consisting of the league's head coaches and media members. The first- and second- all-conference teams consist of eight players. The All-Freshman team is comprised of five student-athletes. C-USA will name its Specialty Award winners, such as Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year Monday.
"What a great honor it is for these three young ladies to be named to an all-conference team," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "They have meant a lot to our team and our success this season. They are all deserving."
All three are having historic single seasons in different capacities.
Edwards' 88 3-pointers are the second most ever by a Blue Raider in a single season. The single-season record is 115 3-pointers, held by Kortni Jones. Edwards is also currently seventh on the single-season list for 3-point field goal percentage with a .419 mark.
Petty is putting together one of the greatest single seasons ever by a Blue Raider point guard. She is the only point guard in school history with four double-figure assists games in the same season. Petty's current mark of 162 assists are the second most ever in a single season and just 23 helpers shy of Heather Prater's single-season record of 185.
Johnson has been named C-USA Freshman of the Year five times, which ties Middle Tennessee Hall of Famer Priscilla Robinson Murray for most by a Blue Raider in a single season. Robinson-Murray won five Ohio Valley Conference honors in 1990-91.
"When you are talking about players doing something that has only been done a couple of times in the history of Middle Tennessee women's basketball, then you are really saying something because there is tremendous history and a legacy of some outstanding players throughout the history of Lady Raider basketball," Insell said.
Edwards is ranked among the nation's Top 20 in four categories: 3-point field goals per game (12th, 3.0), 3-point field goals made (12th, 88), free-throw percentage (19th, .865) and 3-point field goal percentage (20th, .419). She is among C-USA leaders in 3-point field goals made (1st, 3.0), 3-point field goal percentage (2nd, .419), scoring (2nd, 18.1), minutes (2nd, 37.0), free-throw percentage (3rd, .864) and rebounding (ninth, 7.9).
The versatile guard has eight double-doubles this season. She has led Middle Tennessee in rebounding 17 times, and has produced eight double-figure rebounding games. Edwards has 26 double-figure scoring games. She is four-time C-USA Player of the Week.
"I can't tell you what an honor it is to be named All-Conference in C-USA," Edwards said. "It is a very tough league with some excellent players. You really have to come ready to play every night. I am happy to be part of such a great team and group of players at Middle Tennessee. We really are a balanced team and this honor could have gone to a lot of players on our team."
Petty has been outstanding as Middle Tennessee's playmaking point guard. The Murfreesboro, Tenn., native is the team's second-leading scorer with 12.3 points per game, and she is 26th nationally and leads C-USA in assists with 5.6 per contest. Petty is also 10th in the conference in steals with 1.8 per game.
Petty has dished out five or more assists in 18 games, including four double-figure assists games. She has also scored double figures in 22 games.
"I put in a lot of hard work in the summer and offseason to be a better player for my team, and I think that's paying off this season," Petty said. "We have been playing very well, sharing the basketball and just playing good team basketball. That's pretty much been the key to our success. I'm honored to be mentioned as one of the top players in our conference because there are some very talented players in Conference USA."
Johnson has had a smashing breakout rookie campaign. The Murfreesboro native has started 28 games and scored double figures in 18, including 16 of the last 17 overall. Johnson averages 11.5 points and she is fifth in C-USA in field goal percentage (.531) and ninth in blocked shots.
Her consistent play against C-USA foes earned her one of the five spots on the All-Freshman team.
"I am blessed to be at Middle Tennessee," Johnson said. "I really feel as though we are a team and that means a lot. I have said this before, but my teammates are why I have succeeded and received these awards and honors. They have gotten me the ball in position to score and they have shown great trust in me."
Middle Tennessee will begin play in the C-USA Championship during quarterfinal action at Bartow Arena Thursday at 5 p.m. The Blue Raiders will play the winner of No. 7 seed Louisiana Tech and No. 10 seed Rice.
